Well I've plunged into design finally. I find though, that when I design something it usually turns out to be symmetrical. I guess thats not always bad, but for me its more of just a lack of real design experience & my mind cannot come up with any really great asymmetrical ideas.

So here is what I have so far. I like it because it will be nice & open, but part of me wonders why I am going to do it like this since you will only be able to see about half of it in the rendering. Sure I can animate it, but I don't want to be showing off the same thing twice in a 20 second animation.

I still need to design the window walls. I wish I had more experience with glass systems, but I don't, which will make it a little difficult. I would however, like to use some nice shapes in the window wall that will create interesting shadows, which I hope to animate later on if I get that far.

There is a recessed opening at the ceiling surrounding the elevator corridor. I might do something fun with lights & materials there. Also there is an opening around the elevator at the ground level which will let you see down to a pool of water below. That won't carry through on the still image, so again I will have to do something with lights & materials to highlight that. OR, I could make a giant fountain that flows from the ceiling to the bottom level...eh, maybe not - boring!

Any comments, concerns, or violent disagreements are certainly welcome! Thanks.

You might want to consider shifting one center axis (1/2) to 1/3-2/3. This would certianly shift how the space was / could be used for peeps, your renedered views, and create a flow rather than a static tension... imho

how about trying a skewed ellipse for your core area? this would give a nice sweeping curve towards your reception area.

for glass details especially planar glazing (no budget to worry about ;P ) try
    http://www.mero.us/project_portfolio/

they have all the parts for doing planar.

look forward to watching your design progress

I think I am about to pull a complete 180. My first design just wasn't really exciting me. This new one is putting a smile on my face thinking about all the possibilities. It's not really anything crazy, but I already feel more comfortable with this idea than the other one.

I will post some new drawings as soon as I can.

Here is a quick section of my new design. Its not much to look at yet, but I will probably use this in repetition to create a nice long corridor that ends at a larger room that houses the functional elements of the building.

This is going to be a space that has a very continuous feel between interior & exterior spaces...or at least I hope it does.

I've gone vertical! Well its still not much, but at least I've started modeling. The composition isn't quite how I imagined it to be, but I think I will continue in this direction. Ok, time to go to a meeting now....BO-RING!

Wow, I wish you guys would have told me what a bad idea this was and spared me a little time! No, I, with the help of my wife, realized that this just isn't very suitable for this type of rendering challenge. A corridor can be nice, but it is the main lobby space that I need to be focusing on like all the other competitors have been doing so far.

So...back to the drawing board! Hopefully I will have something later today.

oh...and here is the last image of my last design before I retired it. Maybe it will turn into something good someday. I would have loved to animate this with light & color.

Tim, I really like this direction, is there some way you could combine this and your previous scheme?

The work and detailing of the structure/lighting and feeling is wonderful. It has a very relaxing and inspirational feel to it.

I like it very much, and you know, who says a lobby space has to be your typical lobby space- I see the lobby space as a space of transition from one type of space to another, so maybe you have this in your new design!
