I've been in the drafting/visualization business for...well...much too long.

I've just now noticed that I need to hold my newspaper at monitor distance.

There are 2 kinds of CAD operators...those that wear glasses and those the will wear glasses...

As you approach 40, your arms get shorter.

My wife recently observed "I guess when you hit 40 the warranty is up".

I just filled my prescription for reading glasses (and now I can see what year those CDs were released). I had it for almost a year before filling it. 20/20 is average eyesight--you can do much better than that. I used to have 10/20 sight, now a lovely pair of spectacles.

My hearing isn't what it was due to the Clash and Ramones. I haven't yet experienced any of the 'guy' problems, but there is evidence that Viagra may cause blindness.

The warranty is definately up.

Fran

i must have the shortest arms on This planet

i am way over 40 (i can almost remember That far back)

almost ??

i have about 17 years of glare stare under my belt

unfortunately for me i got into computers at age 36

i had a severe injury To both knees while playing footballe at 14

both of my knees still need to be replaced missing 3/8" bone in joints

**

at 35

i had been out of work for more Than 1 year due To galvanize poisoning

(from welding)

and had previously missed 1.5 years due To an injury To my right elbow

while working at a dairy, got kicked by a cow and couldnt use my right arm

for 3 months

not To mention being electrocuted at 27 almost lost my left hand

couldnt hold an empty 4 oz styrofoam cup Too much pain To bear

other Than That and almost dying several others Time

i just have To say That Thank god i am not accident prone

by The Time i was 19 i had almost died 4x Times

**

i finally got into computers at age 36

my eyes have Taken a beating over These last 17 years

middle aged spread sat in, doing computers was my 1st ever

sit down job which was hell-on-earth for my knees all Those years

There is some documentation To The effect That if you are short-sighted

That staring at a computer monitor might encourage The development of

cataracts and other glaucoma like eye-ball problems

i started with computers b4 The monitors were LOW Radiation compliant

my face still burns sometimes when at The end of a day i Take off my glasses

(i can not read anything without glasses absolutely zero)

due To my life-Threatening knee injury instead of Taking archi-torture back in The day at ASU

i ended up doing Russsian language as a major, it seemed to have a viable commerical value back in early '70s

something called a "cold war" ( i hate snow)

when studing Russian i would pick up a book and black out within 15 minutes

9 eyes exams later it was determined That at The 20 foot examination standard

That my eyes were focusing 39 inches apart vertically and crossed by 4 or 6 inches

at arms length reading a book or looking at a monitor This = approx. 2" per foot

i couldnt do anything between 18 and 36 years, just starvation, homelessness etc low-life activities etc

it is only pain, its only a life i will get a real one next Time

i am finally doing (reasonably well)

all Things not being considered necessarily equal

i hope This makes someone else feel better

and please do get your eyes (head) examined

your livelihood depends upon it, and better sooner Than later

my eyes hurt all the time. my glasses are very thick. i take'em off, and the world becomes a wild mass of colors and shapes. my permanent headache is at its highest by 6 pm every day. i have to rob my eyes every five minutes or so, trying to rip'em out.

but, besides that, i haven't noticed any change. poor you guys.

for what it is worth, i stunled on this last night....

14. Prevent near-sightedness!

Poor distance vision is rarely caused by genetics, says Anne Barber, O.D., an optometrist in Tacoma, Washington. "It's usually caused by near-point stress." In other words, staring at your computer screen for too long. So flex your way to 20/20 vision. Every few hours during the day, close your eyes, tense your body, take a deep breath, and, after a few seconds, release your breath and muscles at the same time. Tightening and releasing muscles such as the biceps and glutes can trick involuntary muscles -- like the eyes -- into relaxing as well.

I'm now 44...and yes my arms get shorter every year...this is natural though...has nothing to do with our work (IMO). Just one of those "great" things about getting older.:)

I did just purchace a 24" widescreen monitor from Dell...it's helped a lot.

At 58, and apparently the oldest guy posting on this thread (much to my chagrin as I'd always thought Ernest was older), I can say that eyesight isn't the only thing that doesn't work like it used to.

My advice to the forty-somethings is to invest in bran futures, not to mention stock in the drug companies specializing in laxative, memory and "circulation" drug research, though not necessarily in that order.

You might want to consider companies working on better, more effective dental and hair replacements as well. Go here for eyeglasses though. After doing some research, I saved over $200 and with great service to boot.

The point is, if you get in early you can probably make money as your mind and body begin the inevitable downward spiral :)

what is this whole arms shorter thing? ..i have never heard of this.

Testosterone renders you stupid, or, Fran is more cleverer than the rest of us.

OR

Its a visual joke--imagine someone--me, for example--having to hold out a CD at arm's length to try to read the song list, so the arm seem to get shorter as even this sad gesture fails to reveal what track 6 is. Reach farther, reach farther...the arms must be getting shorter.

You'll get it, guys, there's still time.

i once read that when you get older your entire body shrinks, you get shorter, maybe because your bone-joints and muscles get stiffer , or something like that.

human nature.

The change in eyesight at around 40 is even more sudden and noticeable for people who are far-sighted. Far-sightededness usually goes undiagnosed, since you can still read the black board as a kid. But far-sighted people unknowingly compensate for it by slightly straining their eyes to adjust to close-up stuff. Then, as you approach middle age, and the flexibility wanes, you lose that ability to adjust as you normally did and have the additional disadvantage of the age far-sighted thing.

This was my situation - it's like it happened overnight. Not even time for denial. I thought it was something serious. And once you hit 40, if you fart wrong, you're convinced you have butt cancer.

Travis, you are so young. So innocent. ;)
