Hi, ...I know some people around here, but this is my first post. Another attempt about photorealism and the first "round" for an ambitious project: to make the Court of Lions (Alhambra Palace, Granada, Spain)

Done in Viz 4 without radiosity (just two lights: a standard direct and a IES sky). I used too RealFlow, Simbiont for some textures and Deep Paint (mapping)

I'm currently seeking for the necessary documentation to model every detail ...for example those ornaments hanging from the arcs... Take a look at this photo and you'll understand the dificculty of this work...

This next image is a test done to check bump maps with indirect lighting using radiosity (of course there's only one light and a simple plane under the capital in order to produce indirect light). You all know the problems with Viz's indirect lights and bump, however the results are rather satisfactory...

Greetings to all, and good luck -and long life- to this forum.

...waiting for your comments,
Palmiro

Wow, really impressive work! I´m also from spain, but I´ll try to write this in english...hehe, I´ve said try...

The work you plan to do with the Alhambra palace...sounds great...and really difficult! The main problem I see on it is the one with the bump maps...and what happen with them on the edges of the model: the lack of roughness on them. As it can be seen on the detail of the capitel, the edge is completely clear. And to get the realism on them the only way I see is to modell the bump completely in 3d: something ridiculous in such detailed scenes.

I dont know if anyone have the same problem or have ever thinked of it...

Anyway, and despite this little matter....Ill be waiting your images!!!

Me conformo con que sean de esta calidad!!! jeje. Un saludo.

Santi

What can I say...You're the site of the week!
And as so, you could help us, ordinary mortals, with the new VIZ 4. I tried to use it myself, and I didn't get results THIS good. Aren't you interested on writing a tutorial about radiosity on VIZ? You could surely help a lot of people (me first!!!!)

Hey Palmiro
Nice detail on your images
you have a long road ahead of you
but keep focused, and your bound to create something stunning.
thought id help you with a few ways to handle your scenes, that im sure you know, will get very large.

Use Xref wherever possible, lately i have been working on a very tiny scene, that is just a simple outline of my architectural project, and everything is Xrefed into the scene.
This makes the file size of your main project file tiny and you just enable/disable what you need to see to work with.
Makes loading and saving and of course your autobackup very fast, and if a file corrupts, it doesnt take your entire scene with it

LOD....or Level Of Detail is the most important tool that lets me make huge scenes that i never dreamed off a few years ago
this will help you with what santi was talking about....bump map vs displacement
if you made 1 model with all the detail to the max ie displaced 100 thou polygon pillar,
1 model with bump map around 10 thou polys
and another with just mapping and 1 thousand polys.
load it up into your LOD
and it will replace the appropriate model based on distance at render...and in your viewport it will have the lowest res model.
very cool

hope it helps
good luck

Hey Palmiro,

Great work! An great site. You have some fantastic work. My only comment would be the rocks under the water on your fountain pic. They appear to be too flat and like a bitmap. I think they need a bump and specular map. Other than that..wow!

First of all thanks Jeff, I've had a little surprise when finding my name in your home page! Maybe you must to send an email before to prevent cardiac shocks...

Now I'll try to answer everyone:

Santi: "And to get the realism on them the only way I see is to modell the bump completely in 3d"

you mean with displacement maps? well, the capital is just a test for BUMP maps, and as you know displacement create a great amount of faces... If I finish some day the whole court I'll use disp. only in the foreground. This may be a good solution, think...

Rick: "Aren't you interested on writing a tutorial about radiosity on VIZ?"

hmmm, my English isn't very good and really all Viz users have several good tutorials and help with the .chm documents which come with the package (help folder)

To Wolf just MANY THANKS for your suggestions ..I've really never used LOD or Xref because this my first project of huge dimension. Be sure your help is very appreciated.

Jeff: "the rocks under the water on your fountain pic. They appear to be too flat and like a bitmap"

If you mean the gravel, I agree and I've tried different ways to fix it but nothing works...

animart: "can you give us your opinion abouth whath software do you like most and why: lightscape or Viz 4, thinking in radiosity ofcourse"

Difficult question AMIGO... check this test: http://www.terra.es/personal2/palmir...comparison.jpg
LS is still very good but spents more time and bring some problems... you decide.

and finally for now: THANK you very much for the comments
