Quick Test Render Set-Up

Does anyone have advice on a quick render set-up for scanline or mental ray? I got lured in by Maxwell and have spent my time learning that without ever learning the native render engines. Now I have a job where I have to crank out concept-type renders - obviously this is not M~R strength - they don't have to be real pretty and textured, but what I'm getting from Scanline and MR now is totally washed out - no contrast at all. Any hints?

I've been very successful with Maxwell renders that look like architectural/foam-core type models. This is the effect I'm trying to get with the faster native engines.

Thanks

There's a scanline tutorial that ships with 3dsmax on using the light tracer option for exterior lighting. So you may want to review that.

For mental ray, add a skylight to the scene for the sky color light. Then add a MR spotlight for the sunlight. Turn on final gather. If splotchy, adjust the FG samples/radius as needed.
