I'm remodeling my mom's kitchen and so felt that I was "ready" to tackle this project with 3ds max 5. in any case, here's the first version, influenced greatly by johnny Grey. I'm rendering with vray free and one thing I just can't understand is why I get NO SHADOWS? everything feels like it's floating. ANother personal complaint is the fact that some of the materials are just not showing up upon rendering. In the second pic, the counter is supposed to be Teak but is obviously missing the texture map...any reason? And I noticed that there are shadows in the second pic... I havn't gotten to modeling the family room (seen in the back of the 2nd pic) and the dining room & living room (back of 1st pic)Also, the chairs are just exported from a free model (www.mr-cad.com)...I just wanted them for reference...

What type of lights are you using? Are you using the VRAY Shadow option for the light's Modify properties if you're using default MAX lights? Also, did you enable the global illumination boxes in the render dialog boxes?

In my opinion the view is of little importance since this is not a professional work (not for profit - you're doing this for your mom's visualization). If it were however, and since it was mentioned in a previous comment, I'd suggest keeping the focal point at the same elevation as the camera point, and render with a larger height setting and then crop down to your liking in photoshop. This will give you nice verticals and help the viewer to be better oriented to the scene.

Your missing material is probably because you forgot to apply a texture map to the surface. The rest of your textures are showing up fine. It could also be the material lost the location to the image file. Edit the material and make sure MAX knows where to find the image.

or you can download the TECHNICAL CAMERA script for nice verticals.. that way you dnt have to make your camera and its target at the same height. just do a search for it at www.scriptspot.com

thanks for the response guys. I didn't have too much time to work on it the past two days, but here's what I came up with. I still havn't put in surrouding furniture, and details (dishes, small appliances, misc "stuff") but I won't until I finish a couple more designs, just so I can concentrate on getting the concept drawings first.
I should add, one of the reasons I'm doing so many (to be) different designs and schemes is that I hope to incorporate it into my admissions portfolio for entering grad school in Architecture next fall (applying right now)...I'm trying to show "my creative capabilities for a real world challenge."

    anyways, here's the current shots:
