Smile Example Portfolios

Hello names Caleb all the way around to world in New Zealand

I am looking to change jobs and am wanting to apply at a major architecture company in NZ so i want to have a really good portfolio.
I have seen plenty of online ones and have read alot about portfolios on this forum but would love to see a printable portfolio so i can get an idea of what is needed in them and layout ideas.
I am a 3D visual guy using Vray 3Dstudio etc and will be applying for a job being a full time 3D guy, they already have 2 but the company is fast growing and i know i am better than them as i use to work with them.

So if anyone could post some portfolios they have made in the past that would be greatly appriciated.

Either way thanks to you all as this site and members have made my work 10fold better

Caleb

What the heck, I'll bite. I'm in the middle of reworking mine, and here's a very rough draft. (Some things need to be redrawn, e.g. the building in Florence, and it's probably too heavy on 3D and needs more 2D and it cuts off abruptly, unfinished.) The layout is using A4 paper, which prints full bleed in my Epson, with guides making another smaller A-proportioned rectangle inside and three columns based on those guides, with certain places text can be and certain areas that images or collages of certain sizes can occupy. I try to have each project credited correctly when needed and when there's a story, to tell it (without relying too much on text). The Swiss721 font is used but I can't remember if I've embedded it. (You almost can't go wrong by using the Swiss721 font.)

PDF file is here.

Any comments welcome.

This is nice Andrew.

Kind of off subject here...what is your workflow for getting Sketchup into 3dsmax? I've read a ton of posts on this, but I'm still not having a lot of luck. You seem to use it quit a bit.

Export 3DS file, single object, 2-sided by material, no cameras. Import it and you usually end up with multiple objects, but not enough to be out of control and few enough that it's really simple to deal with the materials, which come in as a few multi/subs. The geometry's going to be really simple and you're going to have to do some smoothing, and if your renderer has auto-fillet that will help a lot.

SU>Max Workflow... (We use it almost exculsively for ArchVis)

Go get Accutrans3D (www.micromouse.ca) shareware. Export the model from SU by mat to 3ds. Open the 3ds in AT. Use the merge objects by material under tools. Converts all objects to one by mat. Re-weld verts and save the 3ds again. This will import with instanced/referenced mats into Max.

The only downside is if one of your merges has more than 32,767 verts, the max one objets can have in 3ds, dxf or dwg.

Good luck.

I was going to comment that you really don't need a third party program for this, but then I saw that Accutrans is $20, so what the heck

Very nice portfolio Andrew! I would make a few small tweaks. I think the undergrad work / physical models should go towards the end and put the strongest 3D work first as it makes the best / first / strongest impression that way. I also think that more freehand / working sketches might be nice throughout (like your Ronchamp study sheet) as it shows visual thinking and process - very important to many portfolio viewers. You might think about consolidating the descriptions of software used on each image into one description on the page as it gets a little monotonous to read having it for every single image. (If you're meeting with someone you can describe which image is Maxwell vs. Vray etc.) Having the project descriptions and text in consistent positions on the pages also helps with graphic continuity in the same way and helps keep things from being too visually hectic. Overall it looks really good!

Thanks for the comments. All good points and I've made some quick changes and updated the file. Still incomplete. The Ikea final design needs to go in there as well as a "Tech Business Incubator / Apartment Complex / Train Station / Entertainment Venue" (sometimes grad studio get weird) and some more stunning visuals and ispired drawings of course.

Keep us updated as I'd like to see it as it progresses if you don't mind. (I know what you mean about the weird grad studio assignments too and yours sounds like the extreme edition of mixed use!)
