Extruding lines

I have a very simple question, but not simple for me obviously. In Vix or Max....I created a multi-segment line and closed it - like a closed p-line in autocad. I want to extrude it so I get the shape that I've created in whatever thickness I need. But when I go to extrude, all I get is the edge extrusion and not the face.

 

What am I missing?

it.s not a proper closed polyline.

 

sub-select all the verts and weld. (or just select the start/end verts and weld together) and when extruding make sure the surfaces on start and end are switched on.

thanks for the tip Strat. I had a couple of vertices that were crossing too, so that might have had something to do with it also.
