Architecture: The Last Remnants of Mankind
Among the arts, architecture has the most incredible influence over mankind. We have the ability to close ourselves off to other forms of art. We can close the novel, turn off the music, not attend a play, sleep through a movie, or refuse to open our eyes to a painting or a sculpture. Architecure is different. It is the only form of art with which humans must have constant interaction. It is where we are, where we go, and where we want to be. It is all around and without the function that it provides, the human race could not survive and thrive. A problem has arisen though. Thriving has exceeded the necessary and reached heights of excessiveness, waging an assault on Earth in the name of “progress”. It will lead to her utter destruction. She could not let this occur.
Cycles of ecological change have been accelerated by human provocation. Ignorance, denial, and greed overruled sound judgment toward nurturing the once fecund Mother Earth. The human race became a plague to her and she has become weary and responsive. She began a cycle of destruction from which renewal, a better beginning; would eventually ensue. A New Ice Age has begun. As the earth grew colder man took flight to the warmer parts of the earth but mother earth nature laid her blanket of ice swiftly upon her bosom so as not to prolong the suffering of her children, no matter how wayward they were. The day when flora and fauna have flourished and on the earth is past and all that is left are structural testaments to humankind’s attempt to survive and thrive on the changing earth. The Serbie Pavilion is one such testament. Though it is not surrounded by the splendor that once was, it is still a testimony to the beauty, accomplishments, and a time when humankind prospered.
