Black buckets in mental ray renderings?

its a memory problem.

 

Try rendering through backburner to free up a bit more ram.

Or turn off the frame buffer and just render to file.

Turn off being able to see the FG calculations in the Frame buffer.

If you can get your head around the BSP settings play with those.

Use the memory managment tools in the processing tab

use placeholder objects

do a split scanline render

generate the FG and or GI at a lower res, saving to disk, the re-rendering with the saved FG/GI solution

 

As you can see there are a few ways to control memory use, hopefully these will help
