You have to explode polylines to plain lines before importing. Also, circles and closed shapes sometimes get turned into polygons by C4D. Once imported, the lines will all be seperate spline objects, and make the program slow down. Its best to select all of the lines, or meaningful groups of them, and 'connect', then delete the original ones. That will speed things up considerably (if you had a lot of lines imported).

Edit>Preferences>Import/Export>DXF Import:

You have:

*scale (1 if your file is cm and your units in C4D are cm, or apply multiplier as needed)

*Circle Subdivisions-defaults to 72, which is OK but sometimes too many points

*Connect - I like 'by color', as it does what 'by layer' does, only will also separate out things on a layer into their colors and group them.

Then checkboxes for yes or no on:

Frozen layers (I select this)

2D Elements (I select this)

Align Normals (I do not select this)

Triangulate polygons (I do not select this)

Perhaps you do not have the 2D Elements checked?

after saving as r12 dxf from AutoCAD you must close the drawing in AutoCAD before trying to open in Cinema. this is what is causing the unknown file format error.

hi guys just wondering if anyone had any pointers on importing 2d dwg -dxf files to cinema 4d? im really struggling cinema 4d just saves unknown file format?

any info would be great thanks dan.
