Hi

 

I would have to say it depends on the shot, if you are realy close up I would strongly recomend using fur as this is the closest to the real thing.

 

I would have to agree with moodo and say stay away from the displacement option on close/medium shots and only use this if the rug is at a distance, because I've seen far too many nice renders spoiled by the most dangerously sharp looking rugs :p

 

The scattering a piece of geometry option is also a good approach though I would use this for medium shots.

 

But the real power behind Rugs and such objects is the texturing. The reason fur looks the best is because the way the light scatters through the fur and reflects off the texture of each individual strand.

So if fur is not an option I would spend some time nailing the texture.
