Default Dual Xeon E5520 2.26 Vs Core i7

    Hi,

guys i am in a big Dilemma i am going to buy a new system for professional
3d architectural Visualization and i am confused in these two new different
    technology

    First Thought

In my first thought i was thinking of buying a Core i7 920 2.66 ghz,8 Mb Cache and do that overclock till 4 or 4.2 with Liquid cooling Kit. that way i am able to get a decent rendering time for a Normal project.

    Second Thought

After some time i get to know that Intel had launched a Xeon series called
5500 then i send my requirements to my computer guy and he send me the
price quote for dual xeon quad core E5520 system. The whole system price is almost same like core i7 system.

So What to Do now, i am in a big confusion. Please suggest some advice so that I should buy some thing in which i did not regret in future.

Also i am listing the hardware configuration for both systems so that you guys suggest me what to add or remove.

    Xeon System Configuration

Intel 5520 2.26 ghz Xeon Quad Core ( 2 CPUS)
    Intel Motherboard 5520 SC
Hard Disk 150 gb Raptor Western Digital 10000 RPM

Graphics card Nvidia Quadro FX 1800
Intel Chasis SC 5300 + 600 watts Psu
    Ram 6 gb ddr3 ECC ram (2 gb x 3 ).

    Core i7 System configuration

    Motherboard Asus P6T Deluxe V2
    Intel I7 920 2.66 ghz
Hard Disk 150 gb RAPTOR WD 10000 RPM
Hard Disk 1 TB Wd sata2 32 Mb Cache
    Dvd Rw Sata HP
    Graphics Card Nvidia GTs 295
    Cabinet Coolermaster HAf 932

Tft 24 “ Benq G 2412 HD Full HD with HDMI Port

    Dual E55xx Results in frybench:

    12 2x Xeon E5530 2.40 w/12GB 4m 20s gene crucean

    13 2x Xeon E5520 2.26 w/24GB 4m 22s steve burke

    14 2x Xeon E5530 2.40 w/12GB 4m 23s azken

    15 2x Xeon E5520 2.26 w/6GB 4m 24s mnietek

Single i7 920 overclocked results in frybench:

    24 Core i7 920 4.00(OC) w/6GB 5m 19s lwan

    25 Core i7 920 4.00(OC) w/6GB 5m 22s simone giano...

    26 Core i7 920 4.00(OC) w/6GB 5m 22s simone giano...

    27 Core i7 920 4.00(OC) w/6GB 5m 23s maxime mulle...

You can almost reach the performance of the dual E5520 by overclocking a single i7 920 to 4Ghz according to the results from frybench. You also get the option to drop in a 6 core i9 once it is released if you go for the i7 X58 build. Honestly, I have not looked too much into the E55xx setup to see what their lifespan/upgrade path might be, so there may be some 6 or 8 cores in it's future as well? There is also a new i7 X55 build that should be considered. You will be limited on the upgrade path with an i7 X55 build, but it will be much cheaper than an i7 X58 build, and you should be able to achieve comparable or better performance to what is currently achieved in an i7 920.

I would give it a little while to see what exactly the new i7's on the X55 chipset are capable of, but I have a feeling there is going to be a rush for everyone to start upgrading their render nodes once the results start coming in.

Sorry to jump in here again, I know you are looking for different viewpoints, but I thought this information may be a little more clear in helping you make the decision.

An overclocked i7 will be faster at single thread processes, such as when you are drawing, modeling, or manipulating images. The dual E5520 will render faster because rendering is a multi-threaded task. This is something that is touched on in the recent thread about the new i5/i7s.

(It's great having a BOXX tech on the forums because he will surely step in if I am misdirecting you )

Both will be good workstations, and both will be good render slaves. It all depends on where you prefer to have the extra power. If your main purpose of getting this machine is to improve local rendering performance over your current machine, then go for the dual E5520. If your main purpose of getting this machine is to improve how pleasant it is to work on your files, then go for the single i7 overclocked.

I suspect that you will struggle to find a workstation card made in the last 5 years that can't output 1920x1080.
