I almost do not want to ask this question as it seems like it should be so easy. How can I export or merge a scene into another scene and bring along the materials? For instance, if want to merge a scene of a lamp post that has a multiple materials, how can I bring that lamp into another scene with the textures shown in the material browser?

Well you can be real simple and just open the material editor with the object you brought in selected. Click on an empty material slot, then click the "Get Material" button, change the radio button on the upper left to "Selected" and your materials should appear in the window. Then just double click one to put it in the selected slot. Lather, rinse, repeat.
