Problem imprting .3ds from ArchiCAD to 3ds max

Hi
Recently I was given a .3ds file exported from ArchiCAD but when I've imported that file a massage appeared:
"Improper file format"

I though it may be because of the big file size (around 60 mb) so I told the client to split the geometry to several .3ds files but the problem persisted. I'm really stuck. Any ideas?

I had this problem long time ago,

one solution would be to try to open the file in another software and then export it from there....sketchup, blender or c4d...

Thanks for the answer. I've opened it with Modo and then exported it to 3ds max. Go figure...
