I doubt there are any rules, but I always go for a thickness. Somewhere around .25 - .5 inches total. I find that, in general, it is always best to model things the way they are in the physical world over trying to cheat them. This approach obviously can't always be the case, but for the basic things like walls and glass etc... it helps.

Vray likes a thuickness for correct refraction inside the material.
