HELP! Can't achieve a realistic brushed stainless steel material!! Frustration!!

I have tried for a long time to achieve a convincing brushed stainless steel material but somehow I just can't. I've tried making my own, using pre-made ones, nothing works. I don't know if it's my render settings or what, but I can't get a realistic look to my interior scenes that use a brushed steel. It usually either comes out all glittery looking or chrome. Furthermore, I get this repeating pattern all over my objects corresponding to the bump texture the mat file uses. If I try to scale it appropriately the grain of the steel becomes too enlarged, further contributing to the frustration factor. This also happens with wood. Somebody please help me before I pull my hair out. Also, my job depends on my ability to do this. Online tutorials assume I've been using VRay my whole life. I need someone to fill in the blanks for me here. Thanks.
