Poor viewport performance

There are almost 700k polys in the scene and the the FPS does not go above 40. I know its enough to work with, but I worked with a few million polys and the FPS was more than that.

In this scene I set some objects (500k polys total) to be displayed as a box and it didnt really help and the scene uses a bit more ram/hdd space than usual.

What could cause this?

Im using Max 2014
