Help with building a render slave

Recommended Posts

Hi All

Please could somebody give me some advice on building a render slave to run along side the computer I have now.

The renders that I am doing are interior shots.

This is the spec of my computer that I have now.

1 x

Gigabyte GA-X99-SOC Force Socket LGA 2011v3 7.1 Channel Audio eATX Motherboard

4 x

Crucial BLS8G4D240FSA 8GB DDR4 2400 MT/s (PC4-19200) CL16 DR x8 Unbuffered DIMM 288pin

1 x

Intel Core i7-5930K 3.50GHz Socket 2011-V3 15MB Cache Retail Boxed Processor

1 x

Corsair Hydro Series H90 140mm High Performance Liquid CPU Cooler

1 x

Sandisk 128GB Ultra Plus SATA III 2.5 Inch Internal SSD for Notebook

1 x

Corsair HX750i 750 Watt Power Supply

1 x

Gigabyte G210 1GB DDR3 VGA DVI HDMI PCI-E Graphics Card

Should I buy another computer exactly to the spec I already have or could anyone suggest anything different?

The rendering im doing is CPU rendering so would like to stick to that rather than GPU rendering if possible.

At the moment there isnt a budget as such but I don't want to be breaking the bank, I would say up to £2000 would be nice.

If you had a £2000 to spend what would you choose?

Thank you for your help

John

For £2000 i would replace the workstation with a 5960X and use the 5930K as node

(+windows)

maybe a different video card and case, i don't know what you need, if you're using a G210 now...

and maybe a M.2 SSD like the SM951 (PCIe x4, AHCI or NVMe) instead of the 850pro, but you need to check if it is bootable with the board.

Or a 5820K as node

Hi thank you for your replies

I've just noticed that i have put the wrong graphics card down, I have the NVidia Quadro K4200 with this change what would your thoughts be?

For a render node would i need a decent graphics card? I've been reading and it seems to be all about CPU power??

Another possible setup could be this:

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

CPU: Intel Core i7-5960X 3.0GHz 8-Core Processor (£807.37 @ More Computers)

CPU Cooler: Thermaltake Water 3.0 Extreme S 99.0 CFM Liquid CPU Cooler (£91.23 @ Amazon UK)

Motherboard: ASRock X99 Extreme4 ATX LGA2011-3 Motherboard (£165.86 @ Dabs)

Memory: Crucial Ballistix Sport 32GB (4 x 8GB) DDR4-2400 Memory (£259.99 @ Amazon UK)

Storage: Sandisk Ultra II 240GB 2.5" Solid State Drive (£75.98 @ Amazon UK)

Case: Phanteks Enthoo Pro ATX Full Tower Case (£83.50 @ CCL Computers)

Power Supply: Super Flower Leadex Gold 650W 80+ Gold Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply (£83.98 @ Aria PC)

Total: £1567.91

Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available

with a cheap gpu and with a total cost of around 1600£ you are way inside budget.

Two Xeons could also fit: E5 2660 v3 (10c/20t) and E5 2670 v3 (12c/24t) but the 5960X with an oc of 4.4GHz (which isn't so difficult to achieve with a good cooler like the one in the list above), can easily surpass them both in rendering speed.

Just my 2 cents.

Hi

Thank you to all of you for your replies

I've taken on board what you have said and we have come up with this... what do you guys think? does this look like a good spec? It's slightly over budget but if it will give me high performance and quicker render times it will be worth it.

1 x ASUS Z10PE-D8 WS - motherboard - SSI EEB - LGA2011-v3 Socket - C612 £390.55

2 x Intel Core i7-5960X Extreme 3.00GHz Socket 2011-V3 20MB Cache Retail Boxed Processor £1,360.82

2 x Corsair Hydro Series H90 140mm High Performance Liquid CPU Cooler £114.16

2 x Crucial BLS8G4D240FSA 8GB DDR4 2400 MT/s (PC4-19200) CL16 DR x8 Unbuffered DIMM 288pin £110.00

1 x Corsair 180GB Force Series GS SSD £81.66

1 x Corsair HX750i 750 Watt Power Supply £104.70

1 x Gigabyte G210 1GB DDR3 VGA DVI HDMI PCI-E Graphics Card £19.99

1 x Fractal Design Define Xl R2 Computer Case (titanium Grey) £83.32

TOTAL £2,265.20

Would the power supply handle it or would it be better getting a 1000w power supply? the graphics card isn't an issue as its a slave and I'm only using the CPU power
