Render build using a gtx1080, help to choose CPU and MOBO

Hello everyone;

 

I have to build a new render machine and decided to use the gtx1080 (VGA ASUS STRIX GTX1080 A8G GAMING) as my GPU. I already have case and the computer will be used with CAD, 3ds Max and Vray.

 

Now I need some help choosing the CPU and MOBO, any help would be greatly appreciated.

 

CPU: now looking at:

 

INTEL 1151 CORE I7 6700K 4.0 GHz

INTEL 2011 XEON E5-2620 V4 2.1GHz

 

 

Would a SAMSUNG 512GB M.2 2280 SSD 950 PRO SERIES (MZ-V5P512BW) make a big difference against SAMSUNG 500GB M.2 2280 SSD 850 EVO SERIES (MZ-N5E500BW)

 

I have a Quadro k4000 any chance of paring the GTX and the quadro?

It is one build from start to finish. Why create a different thread for every "move" or thought you make? One thread, all answers, more helpful for all.

 

The 2 CPUs on question are totally different...no relation other than price being in the same ballpark. The Xeon will be too slow for your cause, its more appropriate for a low power server application than a workstation.

 

The motherboards you are mentioning are also all-over the place.

You just went for the most expensive / fancy in your mind, but you don't even mention overclocking, further more "extreme" overclocking where you might see a "benefit" with those top-shelf boards vs similar Asus mobos at 1/2 or 1/3 the cost. e.g. a Asus Z170-A would probably be working fine already. What do you think is really missing?

 

For much less than a 6700K + a MAXIMUS VIII EXTREME, you can just go for a 6800K & ASUS X99-A and be better off for your purposes. And you can clock the 6800K on this board just fine. If you have no access to the 6800K, see for the 5820K

Hello Dimitri;

 

I am not a computer expert in fact i know very little and that is why i come to this forum.

 

The 6800K is more expensive than the 6700K. My last render machine had a lga2011 and something broke either the cpu or the mobo but no one has this in Thailand and i have no way to find out wich of the two is not working that is why i chose the 6700K. If you say the 6800k is better for rendering in vray and 3ds max i will go for that because the do have lga2011-v3 here in thailand.

 

Asus Z170-A i am not sure i can get have to check but they have available the MAINBOARD 1151 ASUS Z170 PRO GAMING would that work or better wait for the Z170-A?

If you won't be overclocking, get the cheaper one available. Z170 or H97, doesn't matter. I use both Asus & Gigabyte mobos in my builds, no issues with either.

 

The Asus X99-A will do fine for s2011-3. Yes, the 6800K will be all-around better than the 6700K if you will be rendering on that machine. For design work, drafting & general modelling the 6700K is the best choice - given you won't spend more than you need...an enthousiast Z170 board is just overkill.

 

Similarly with the 1080...don't think you will feel the difference in viewport performance over a 1070 for design work, probably not even a 970 or 1060. Vray RT GPU will be better on the 1080 ofc, but do you really use Vray RT GPU?

Most 80+ Gold versions of Seasonic / Corsair / Cooler Master / EVGA etc 600~750W units will be more than enough and in general are all very high quality units.
