Modeling Text on a Surface (3d printing)

Hey guys.

I have a question about modeling text on a surface. So I have this bottle and now that i have finished it I wanted to put the logo of the firm on the surface. How I do it is simple. I import the 2D drawing in 3Ds max. I redraw it with a line and create a surface. Now I go on the front view and with a command Comfort a put them nicely on the surface. Than I extrude them and using Boolean command Union I combine them. However this turns out not to be a clean technique. Because I all i get is letters cut out at back to lay on the surface, but not actual connection between the two. Hence when I try to 3D print them some letters are read by the Slicer (cura) some not. In the links below you can see some reference images.

I hope someone can give me a tip on how to achive this so that i end up with a whole "clean" model. Thank you

Im using 3ds max 2014.

I think when you say "and with a command Conform I put them nicely on the surface" it's possible they aren't quite on the surface, and I think Mark is onto something when he says ProBoolean. I'd place the conformed text just inside of the bottle's surface so you know it's under, then extrude it and modify like you have in the photos, then detach the text, ProBoolean and Merge instead of Union...it'll show the intersection of the text and the bottle on the outside which leads me to think that it will work that way...but that's just a guess.

I think you should use Shape merge instead, when using with the merge option it will cut your base mesh and 'glue' the new text path, this will create vertex connected on the area, nothing behind. that way the mesh still read a single mesh, then you can extrude the test and do modifications.

Booleans will do something similar but it always mess the mesh IMO.

Thank you for all the hints. You guys are more helpful then those at 3dHubs :p

Chris I always have to move the object once I put Comfort on it because it follows the form but never touches it, kinda floats. I must say that I never used Proboolean. Dont know why I always thought the Boolean was the meta command hence best algorithms.

Francisco when you say Shape merge you mean the proboolean command Merge ? I dont really get it, because you said that I extrude after I merge. How can I merge a 2D surface, it would be hard to align them in the first place.

And yes Chris printer doesn't like that. Actually its not the printer but slicer. Software which takes the model and slices it into layers for 3D printer to read the coordinates and extrude those layers. Now if the model is not enclosed and "clean" bugs from the slicer are inevitable. As you can see on the photo of the print, first 4-5 letters were fine while rest are a mess. Even duo all off them are modeled and attached exactly the same.

What Francisco is saying for Shape Merge is use the conform command (you don't necessarily even need to use the conform command here with this technique, and maybe it's better not to actually, try both ways to see what looks best) to get it to take the shape of the bottle, don't move any closer to bottle, then go to compound objects and with the bottle selected hit shape merge (you may have to convert your conformed text to editable spline first if you used the conform command option), then pick your shape (your text) and then it will create an out line of your text onto the bottle. Then do an edit poly or edit mesh modifier first, then you can poly select your text and extrude them out and modify as desired. When done do a convert to editable poly or mesh and you should be good to go.

Here's a link regarding shape merge command...extremely useful command from my experience using it.

OK now after using proboolean i manged to attache the text on the surface and it looks much better then the last time. You can see on the image i have removed the surface that occupy the text. Now I will send this to the printer to see what happens. http://imgur.com/Eiza0f4

As far as Shape Merge go I find it incredible command that I didnt know of -.-. Now i tried to use it and nothing happens. Basically nothing. I click the Shape-merge and pick the shape and it just disappears. Nothing happens on the surface of the bottle. The bottle is completely sealed and clean. http://imgur.com/Y0ajwkX

Must be missing a step...just did a test here and worked instantly.

I see under operands the only item in there is Plane017 which I assume is the hollowed out cylinder but the text should also appear in there...if you click Pick Shape and then select the text, which should be an editable spline, it should just appear on the surface.

Dont know why doesnt want to project the letters with ShapeMerge. When I do something similar to you it works, but on my model it doesnt want to. I tried copying and removing the shell modifier, still nothing. Dont know if there are some rules on where will it work and where not.

As far as the proboolean goes it worked perfectly. I printed the letters this morning and they came out crisp and clean. Thank you guys a lot! :D

What software are you using to slice and generate g-code (looks like Cura)? We use Simplify3d here and it does a pretty great job of handling intersecting models. I just bring in the separate model pieces and align them the way that I want them to print in S3D.

That has by far been the easiest process I have found for something like this, and especially doing something like a logo since you can just have the logo objects in a library that you can add to whatever you like.

I have also used the WrapIt plugin's autowrap feature, but it can muddy up details pretty quickly. It works great for certain things though, especially more organic objects. Hard surface objects not as much.

Meshmixer might be an option as well.
