    Default caterpillar or tank chain

Please, can give me someone some advice for animating a caterpillar or tank chain?

    I tried two different methods:
1.: the chain is one piece with a Path Deform Modifier applied to it.
si it can easily be animated along the Path. Problem: it gets "deformed"!

2.: a couple of chain links are animated with the help of a path constraint controller.
Problem: every link must be animated separately.
Changing the speed is a painful task.

Can anyone help? i am not very experienced with animation and could really need some advice!
    Thanks in advance
    Gue
