So I'm reading though Bertrand Benoits blog tutorial...

http://bertrand-benoit.com/blog/nakagin-photoreal-road-tutorial/

...on creating a photorealistic road for his Nakagin rd. renderings. I've never really used Unwrap UVW and certainly havn't used channel maps before. But, I'm trying to teach myself now. I have no idea how the channel map works with the street markings and the grunge patterns and the unwrap UVW's he has set-up in the road material.

Can anyone maybe point me to a good education source that might help me understand this process?

Cheers, and thanks in advance!

Denis Keman does some good videos on allot of topics one of them is unwrapping, you can watch the basic series and then watch the more advanced one in which he unwraps a chair, the technique then can be applied to anything.

Mazen, Thanks for sharing those, I will have to check out latter tonight. So a few of the issues I was having were because I was not getting the results I was expecting after reading a few things and watching a few tutorials. One problem is my viewport doesn't seem to update when I am making changes to the mapping. I do have the material set to show in the viewport and Materials>Shaded Materials With Maps is checked. This might be due to the digital size of the map file I am using. It renders fine, just going with trial and error at this point to modify it.

Another issue was when I would set the map channels I wasn't hitting "Abandon" I was hitting "Move" and further I didn't know you also had to hit the Reset UVWs button under the 'Channel' roll-out before opening the unwrap in the UV Editor. This helped me a great deal...

1. uvmap object in channel 1

2. uvmap same object in channel 2

3. collapse to edit poly/mesh

4. put uvunwrap, set to channel 2, hit reset UVWs

5. this will show the UVs you created in #2 step.

This was from a thread here...

and here...

The one thing I did NOT do was collapse so I could keep my work and go back if needed to make changes.
