Hi,

I am always having a look at the forum thinking on buying a second pc as a render node, but for one reason or another I never actually do it.

Instead of buying a render node, I was thinking if it wouldn´t be wise to upgrade my current workstation. I am using an i5 2500k with TZ68+. I know that my mobo can take up to a i7 3770 if I update the bios, so I was considering getting an i7 while I can still get the ivy bridge around.

I believe I can sell my used cpu for aprox. U$S 140, and would have to add an extra U$S 145 for the 3770.

What do you think, should I update my workstation, or wait and eventually buy a render node?

(can I even post this here? lol) I'll obviously pay. Just need some help. Model needs delivered by the 21st. I'll need the max file when finished preferably (2012) and you'll need to sign an NDA.

Morning all.

I'm used to using Fusion for comping but am trying to use after effects as i don't have Fusion at my new workplace.

I want to desaturate a certain material in after effects and would like to create a mask/selection using the VRay wire colour channel I have rendered out. Before people start suggesting or asking why i didn't save out an object id or material id or multimatte elements, I didn't have time to setup everything and i ca'nt re-render as i don't have time either!

So, using my limited knowledge i have tried to do what i want but as i'm still new to aftereffects and how it works (regarding layers etc) i'm getting rather confused.

I tried to follow this previous thread but as it's closed i couldn't ask directly!

Here is what I have tried.

I've created a new comp and added an EXtractoR to get the wire color channel. Then I added a Color Key to choose the color i want to create a mask from and then i added a Hue/Saturation to in crease the contrast if it to make it black and white.

So, I'm happy with this as a mask......but how can i use this to mask out a Hue/Saturation on my main comp? I'm very confused!

If this doesn't make sense please let me know and I will elaborate!

As some of you may know, I am not entirely new to 3dsmax or archviz, but I have been out of it for a while. But I know my way around the software and understand several concepts we usually talk about here. I am mostly looking for workflow and techniques especially in box modeling.

Hi all, I'm currently working on a 3ds max scene and was trying to import some decorative 3d models I downloaded from some webistes. But somehow when I open the file and import/merge some of the models into my scene, the model loses its materials and just comes out grey. Any advice on how to keep the materials when I import the models?

Thanks :)

I have attached an image, you can see there that my railings/bamboo poles doesnt render well when its not isolated from the rest of the model parts.. Those poles are just cylinders converted to poly.. I tried putting normal modifiers to flip its normals, but still it renders as black.. Im just using a target direct light for the scene.. This cylinders has UVW map already, Everything renders well except for this parts.. Suggestions everyone? Thanks..
