  1. Hi there, I am looking to render a sculptural form, with tens of thousands of plastic bottles. I'm using V-Ray Next on Rhino. I can get an individual bottle to render correctly, but when rendering them together I end up with a big glittery blob. With no means of identifying what the constituent objects are. So I have two questions: A) If you guys were to approach this, what material and render settings might you use? I'm not concerned with realism per se, more the illustration of intent. And; B) Aside from using proxy objects, any advice on making the scene more economic? Thanks
  2. I found the official revit tutorials to be a great starting point. It shows a lot of the fundamentals on a realistic project. After that video series I recommend Mastering Revit Architecture or anything by Paul Aubin. Regardless of what tutorial series you choose, try and find ones that involve bringing a complete project from start to finish. I found the biggest advantage to using Revit is understanding how the core program and workflow works, after this you start to see patterns and make educated guesses on how to overcome various challenges that Revit most certainly provides.
  3. Hey guys, Recently started tackling V-Ray. Curious about displacement maps. I'm trying to add texture to a rendered-brick-esque material through displacement and bump maps. I'm using the stock 3ds max stucco map for both. However when I do, it seems the faces are actually displaced from the surface, leaving gaps where connected edges should be. I'm trying to do this without the DisplacementMod (which I know works with Keep Continuity) as I don't want the whole geometry displaced, just certain faces with the respective material. Any insight would be appreciated! Thanks EDIT: I'm referring to the darker texture, admittedly the gaps are subtle in this example, but they're there!
  4. Thanks for the response! Yeah, this was one of the better shots I had unfortunately (and the street is almost always too busy to get new snaps on). I was considering adding some entourage at a later time. What method is generally more preferred? - Using photoshop or rendering as part of the scene? The way it sat on the ground kind of bugged me, I was trying to get Ambient Occlusion to take care of that on the matte/shadow/reflection pane. I couldn't get that to work though. Am I incorrect in trying to use Ambient Occlusion for this purpose, is there a better rendering method? Or is it something better to do in post processing? Reflections are easy enough to add, I'll look into that! Thanks a lot for your time!
  5. Studio/Institution: The Gordon TAFE Genre: Other Software: 3ds Max Description: Hey all! Just thought I'd post my first (mostly) complete render. Looking forward to any feedback you can provide, it would be greatly appreciated. In 2010 the UCI international road cycling event was held in Geelong (Australia) as a result the Tafe's Building Design discipline was approached to design starting ramp and award ceremony stage. My group's design was one of three or so finalists which they took into 'consideration'. However ultimately (probably due to budgetary constraints) the competition took advantage of conventional portable construction. Anywho, originally all design and presentation work was done in the then Google Sketchup. So in the interest of helping my learning of 3ds Max + mental ray I decided to redo the old project in 3ds Max. Look forward to seeing your thoughts, suggestions and criticism! Thanks! P.S: I know the cloth around the edges needs a bit of work, I still have a lot to learn about the cloth modifier, feel free to point out any resources!
  6. Sorry to bump my own thread, but does anyone have any ideas?
  7. Hey guys, seem to be having a little trouble with the Dope Sheet editor. I'm currently working my way through a massive book to get acquainted with 3DS Max and I'm up to a section on animation. Unfortunately however the Dope Sheet Editor (and Curve Editor tends to crash at seemingly random occurrences. There is no apparent trigger, and it seems any action will cause it (even just opening the editor at times). There is no consistency in time between crashes either. Sometimes it will happen an hour later, or 10 minutes later. The crash itself doesn't provide a 3ds Max Error Report screen, it just provides the Windows "This Program has stopped working" error, in which you can only hit 'close'. I can't seem to find an error log or anything, so if anyone could provide any insight onto the topic, that would be super amazing. Oh! And I'm using 3ds Max Design 2013 (with a student license). I have updated to Product Update 6 Thanks!
  8. Oh. Well I think I'm just going to have to give up on 3ds Max... it's not for me! Just kidding haha. Thanks for your help!
  9. Wow, thanks for all the responses! This forum is amazing! Turns out it was the aspect ratio differences that was causing the issues. I was kind of hoping that I could use the safe frame to maintain environment map ratio (which it seemed to do admirably) and then use render output dimensions to render a portion of the scene. After typing that out and reading it, it's abundantly clear that's a touch silly - my bad! I do have another query though, if anyone is interested. With the render output, is there anyway to automatically change the render output size/aspect ratio based on what ever view is being rendered? Or do I just need to suck it up, not be lazy, and change the settings myself for each render. This is for projects with multiple scenes of various aspect ratios. Oh I'm using MentalRay too if that makes a difference. Thanks again!
  10. Hi there! I already have safe frame turned on, and this still occurs. It seems I can get it to work as expected using viewport background as opposed to environment. However the few tutorials I've seen on the topic use the environment option. Is there a distinct advantage of the environment option?
  11. Evening all! I'm pretty novice at 3ds max and I'm practicing with old projects. At the moment I'm trying to include a model in a photo using the environment. The environment map is set to 'screen' which is meant to prevent the issue with an offset. Anywho, I can't seem to get the renderer to match what appears in the Target Camera Viewport, and I have for the life of me, no idea why. Any tips and tricks would be super handy. As you can see, in the camera viewport a road line can be seen at the bottom, and in the render it cannot be seen. If there's any more info I can provide let me know, and I'll do so asap. Thanks!
