  1. I dont no if this is a bit late for you but if you are using the newer version of vray, sp5 there is an ambient only light that can be used to fake gi for parts of your aniamtion. We use this all the time for moveing objects. As for faking gi overall it can be a very tricky process and not easy to do in vray. you need many lights to fake colour bleed and bounce with ambient only lights, then use ao for soft shadows, this method needs good post work, colour correction to get it to work though.

    unclamped output

Your probably right Travis, I dont really need all of it. maybe alter the clamp number as you have suggested in other posts. I am interested how it would be managed though if you wanted that much control. say you wanted to do a lot of exposure/colour correction. I guess its a sacrifice like you need to up your AA setings to compensate.
  3. Hi John, personally Im fond of imprinting shapes into a mesh with probolean. seems to be the most accurate way to deal with it. when it comes to sorting out complex levels you will find it easier to poly model them in a fill in the gaps fashion.

    unclamped output

forgive me if I missing a trick here. how does one deal with unclamped highlights if you are outputting to floating point format? these little pixels that are brighter than white do they need to be fixed in post? Subpixal mapping helps somewhat and oviously clamping output fixes it at the expense of loosing pixel data. so how can this be worked around?
  5. thats a good idea nic, I am using pointcache but I think I may need people with paths.
  6. hi folks, Im working on a project with large amouts of people. We are using animated got 3d and manully copying them about. Its not working out to well so what are the solutions for crowds say 100 walking about. I dont really have experiance with 3ds max crowd sims.
  7. We are having trouble using proEXR in after effects 7. It dosnt read the elements contained in the the exr files. what would be an alternative plugin?
  8. I'm having some issues in max 2011 saving back to 2010. Getting a couple of missing Dlt errors, Class PB2 Parameter and Autodesk material. does this mean anything to anyone??
  9. ture it would be sidestep some of the noise issues when brightening something in post only erick. I may play arount with some blue tinted lights with vray shadow maps as a very slight fill also.
  10. I have just finished rendeing out an animation with both exterior and interior crossover ie. moving from outside to indoor in one shot. The way I do it is just to light the interior with ies lights and the standard sun / physical cam setup avoiding any long rendertimes with area shadows. the problem with this is you often dont get the natural skylight creeping in, using vray fill lights will require increased rendertimes, bake with irr map may cause artifacts etc. I would be interested in how other do it with such a setup? Animating the exposure is an option but a tad fussy lol.
  11. we are currently having problems with erroring irrmap files on the network. the server is quite full but recently this has been happening a lot! Is there anything we can try to fix this? this is happening almost every animation and making life very difficult!!

    max 2011 bugs?

hi all a couple of quick questions re max 2011 - the viewport flashes white when snapping is on, this gets very annoying the match texture size checkbox in driver settings keeps turning itself off when rebooting max. both seem to only happen with windows 7. any thoughts?
  14. Well you can use exr, I do for stills and convert into 8 bit when possble. I like adjusting colour/exposure in 32bit. you dont have to though, many use tga, png tiff etc.. 32bit float offers a lot of control in animation and is a better output if you intend to do loads of colour correcting! but the amount of disk spcae isnt always worth it. I use tga for animation, rendering out for vray I mostly use - zdepth, multimat, raw specular, velocity, AO, sometimes a wire colour pass
  15. Studio/Institution: think bdw Genre: Other Software: 3ds max Description: Just some random projects not really architecturally themed , don't ask why lol. I will try and a keep this thread going unlike my last unfinished project lol. note sure what to do next, maybe a still table spread or something.
