  1. One thing that you can't replace in Asia is an onsite photographer. I have taken up Real Estate photography and I print out my CAD plans and am starting to build furniture. It's a blast! All that and I don't have to pay a yearly subscription!
  2. Forgive the bad attitude. People are hiring Architects with the included skills of rendering. Not just Visualization artists like me
  3. The hotest place for arch viz jobs is in India. Literally the economy has completely shifted to make a better living there in this industry then in Canada. Canadian work is all being outsourced to Asia unless you match the Asian prices and want to live with the Canadian cost of living.
  4. Hi guys, When I render my images as stills I have no problems. However when I render my animation I get noise and flickering all over the place on my billboard trees and also on my Autodesk Proceedural Rocks material. I am reusing a single FG map only and have 100 samples along my camera path to calculate the map. I wish I had the option of using Vray. I have increased the antialiasing settings but still have the same problems. Has anyone else been able to fix this? I see that there is a grain reduction filter in Composite, and I think that I will try it considering it took 3 days to render my animation.
  5. This script is a God send for me as I just purchased Carbon Scatter. Thanks!!!
  6. The only thing I can think of is that you may need to recalculate your GI. Do you have reuse final gather checked off?
  7. We often have glass rendering problems with imported geometry. In our studio and have a few different solutions. 1. Most times replacing the glass with a max cube will solve your problems. (You can use edit mesh on your old glass object and attach the new max cube geometry if you wish to replace many instances of the glass. Depending on the bug, this may not work) 2. Make sure the faces are not flipped inwards on a polygon. You can use edit mesh and turn on show normals which will show blue lines pointing outwards on the direction that that the face is oriented. 3. Set your refraction index IOR to much lower. Default is 1.6 I think that oxygen is 1.013 keep it above 1. You will lose accurate refraction values, but your reflection and transparency remain.
  8. I just had this problem myself. It seems like a commercial solution is the best. I am converting satelight imagery to proxy vegitation, so I was looking for a scatter method that used grayscale maps to distribute the trees. I just bought the latest 64 bit 6 core intel machine with 2 GB video memory and 12 Gigs of ram. The best free method I could find was using partacle flow and an instance coverter script from Bobo. This method was still bringing my computer to its knees after exceeding 200,000 mr proxy trees. I caved in and finally bought Carbonscatter which has free render nodes. The UI was a bit hard to figure out at first, but I was able to find some Vue tutorials which used the same UI and mapping techniques. Carbonscatter recognizes easynat trees which come on the 2011 DVD or can be downloaded for free. Good Luck.
  9. Thanks Brian and Andrew for posting this. I just purchased a modification of the Highend system. Had most of it ordered already and noticed this thread and it confirmed my decision. I almost went with the Phenom X6, as benchmarks for rendering in Max showed that it almost matched the i7 980T. I got a great price on the 980 processor, so I dove in... i7 980 Sabertooth Mobo 12 Gigs 1600 ram HIS Readon 6950 2GB Caviar Black HD Antec 300 Case I am leaving a slot or two open for nvidia 580s or 590s once the next generation of cards come to bring the prices down. Looking forward to the arrival of Unlimited Detail (see CGA news) in the next 5 years, so perhaps we wont need these same video cards.
  10. I am just finalizing an order for a system with an i7 980 and and Nvidia Geforce 470 or 480 video card and am glad someone caught me just before jumping off the diving board. http://www.3datstech.com/ Has a specific mention of a software bug in 3DS Max involving 12 core Hyperthreading. I notice that cinebench scores show a huge improvement from the phenom X6 1100T to the i7 980 but not so much with maya and 3DS max. It seems to me that buying the Phenom X6 would be the best investment, unless Max 2012 has tapped into this power somehow. Does anyone know if this issue has been fixed or if there is a way around it?
  11. I am having problems finding a way to compress my video in premiere. No matter what codec I use I get frame ghosting whenever the camera is moving. I have tried to make sure that my project frame rate and output frame rate are identical and also removed the blurred frame option off of each of the clips. I need each of these frames to be clear when the video is paused. Thanks for your help guys!

    Max to OBJ?

This works well. Give it a try. Go to the Maxscript menu, select run script and run the downloaded file. Revit materials are converted into Mental Ray Arch+Design materials in import, so the "Material Converter v0.98b" script found at http://www.scriptspot.com/3ds-max/sc...tags/converter can convert all (or the majority) of your materials to scanline, which exports out of max into an obj format. Happy file conversions!

  14. I'd love to lend a hand. I've thought of teaching as well. Perhaps I could work my way back down there somehow. I'll have to look into it, if you guys have any contacts, let me know.
