  1. What would be the best method for getting some pretty precise button indentations on this sofa arm? I tried paint deformation push pull but with the mesh showing it's hard to see the end result. And there are so many polys the brush tool hops around and doesn't move smoothly. Soft selecting vertices was the best so far but it seems like there's a more controllable way.
  2. Haven't run Max/Vray on my laptop for awhile and trying to figure out why I can open up maxstart.max from C:\Users\Phil\Documents\3dsMax\scenes and everything is as it should be. Material editor defaults to all vray materials. But when I hit reset, the scene opens with all arch and design material in compact material editor. I checked configure user settings and my maxstart defaults to that location. What am I missing? Thanks
  3. Thank You Francisco but this brings up the exact same question. How do the numbers, ex. 1.1327, correspond to the numbers in the Red, Green, and Blue n values? In other words, where did 2.741 come from?
  4. Can someone tell me how to enter these values in the OSLTex dialog. Is it to be entered into the complex_ior osl text file? Thank You
  5. Been meaning to come back to this thread to say Thank You Francisco. Relink bitmaps does the trick and is a great tool. Phil
  6. I have a downloaded cgaxis interior scene that has a bookshelf full of books. I'm trying to merge these books into another interior scene. The books come in ok but the maps don't. Even after using relink bitmaps. In the original file, I see that the maps for all of the book covers are separate cgaxis models and they are not coming with the books on the merge. Nor are they available to select when I try to merge the books into the new scene. The [books] are in brackets when I try to select them to merge. All of the book cover bitmaps are in the same folder. What's the solution? Thanks
  7. Every time I download a model from a website, like books, I open the .max file and everything is as it should be. But when I merge the books into another scene, none of the maps are present. I thought if they were in the same folder as the model it would be automatic. Is there a quick easy way to assign these maps without going into each material individually and changing the path?
  8. I'm not seeing a choice other than fbx. Don't recall ever having that problem with link Revit but had plenty of other probs. So I'm trying converting to .dwg and then link autocaf on import, (for lack of choice as far as I am seeing.)
  9. This is the first time I've tried exporting a revit file to a .dwg and then importing that into max. Everything seemed to be working well until I tried to delete objects. Nothing will delete. Is there a way to make this happen? Thanks
  10. Thank You Arnold and everyone else. I think that even though I am pretty proficient in Revit, I need to get a good handle on how to prepare Revit files for import as Arnold suggests. But I still don't understand why I'm unable to make selections in my max file after import no matter which presetting I use. I go into the layers palette and select Glass to change the material on the windows, and even though I am sure that the Glass material was applied to the window in Revit, it won't select. If I click on the glass with the material editor eyedropper it, and everything else, is autodesk generic material. Even if I import by Revit Families and select the window in the layers palette it is autodesk generic. I would expect a multi subobject material that I could select the id relating to the glass and change the material. Long story short- I can't figure out how to make specific selections after importing Revit files. I've done this in the past but maybe since loading 2016 something has changed?
  11. I'm absolutely amazed! I spent my weekend wading through the garbage trying to figure out at least a decent, workable way to get Revit files into max and be able to actually work on them. The harder I try, the more frustrated I get. Autodesk just failed on this one. So much for the concept of the suite workflow.
  12. Ok so, at this point, I've exported/imported in every way possible and I'm getting the exact same results. Whether I export to fbx in revit, import revit link, by material, by family, as one entity, doesn't make any difference at all. After import, when I open the material editor and select any object, it's "autodesk generic". No mutli-subobject. If I select a window assembly and want to select only the glass, I cannot do it. Or can't figure out how. At this point I'm thinking either I'm just not smart enough to figure this out or I have a twisted install. Not understanding why I can't go into the layers palette and select Glass, and get the selection I'm after.
  13. One thing I'm still confused about though is why, when I import revit link by Revit Families, and then I go into the layers palette in max and try to select the glass on the windows, they don't select? I know that Glass material is assigned in Revit.
  14. Can't tell you how much I appreciate your input Francisco. I'll give your suggestions a try. One thing I have going in my favor is that I am doing the Revit modeling on all of my stuff so far. I'm a contractor specializing in Design-Build Custom homes and remodels so I can create my Revit projects as needed for Max but I just need to get clear on what adjustments need to be made in Revit. I'm getting there. Thanks for your help.
  15. I'm probably driving this Revit import topic into the dirt but I just cannot get a handle on it. Experimenting with different options for importing Revit link files into Max, I don't understand why- I import a Revit file "by material", I've checked all of my materials in the Revit project to make sure they are as I think they should be. Now I go to select the glass on a window and the entire model selects???? I go into the layers palette and select glass, and I get a selection of 2 little round, apparently glass objects in the middle of a room, that I don't even know what the hell they are. None of the windows are selected even though I know that glass material is assigned to all the windows. Every search I do online for importing Revit to max I get 2-3 year old posts. Where can I find this Holy Grail answer before I go crazy? I should add, if it matters, that every time I select objects in the scene to get the material, they are "autodesk generic" What happened to the materials that were assigned in Revit?
