  1. Yes, they scale nicely when rendering. Single core usage is crap though. If you are thinking of buying multiple i7s for render slaves, then this is the better option.
  2. FPS means Frames Per Second. That is, if you want your animation to have 30 fps and the duration is 10 seconds, you will need 30 x 10 frames = 300 frames.
  3. vray does not utilize graphics card when rendering. so this choice is purely for a smooth view port performance. that being said, if you are on a tight budget, you might want to divert more of your money into CPU or other things you might have neglected. Quadro is a "pro" graphics card that is supposedly more stable and accurate. however, is it MUCH MUCH more expensive. Geforce is a "consumer" graphics card that is as powerful as Quadro for a fraction of the cost. Quadro is aimed towards multi-million dollar production studio or researchers that pays their employee a lot of money per hour. Any instability or inaccurate calculations (scientific uses) will cost them more money in the long run. For a "one-man-band" kind of use, this is obviously not the way to go.
  4. Xeons are very expensive and it only starts to make sense economically if you are planing to build a render farm. Dollar / Ghz wise, they start to match up at 5 sets of i7 with 64GB ram. 16GB is too little RAM for rendering heavy geometries. You don't need a high speed one (2133). The benefits are not worth the added cost. Getting more slower RAMs is a better choice. Quadro cards are also very expensive. You pay more for accuracy and thus, stability. But it's a lot of added cost. Go for Geforce gaming cards, I understand they perform very well in view-port performance. Note that rendering with Vray does not utilize graphics power, only processor. So this investment is strictly for a smooth view port performance. I use Dell systems, they cost more but it comes with 3 years onsite warranty which makes sense for a business investment since you can claim the bulk cost as capital allowance.
  5. i believe technically human eye have a field of view similar to a 20mm camera, but the periphery is so blurred and warped that our perception of the view is closer to a 50mm.
  6. can't wait to get my hands on this beast. takes 3 weeks to ship out tho Q_Q. first thing im doing is opening task manager and counting the threads
  7. Yeah, once the scene are loaded into memory, i don't think the speed matters at all. I bought my system from Dell, at 64GB, the 16x4 cost $150 cheaper than 8x8.
  8. Read up some articles about this and arrived to some conclusions. Let me know if I'm right or wrong; In quad channel setting, you have 4 ram module to work in parallel to get a speed boost (quadruple the speed?). In a dual processor system, you mentioned that we need 8 ram module to activate this. Which begs the question, are ram modules not share-able in a dual processor system? ie, 64gb ram in dual xeon essentially only has 32gb? EDIT: Apparently the speed doesn't quadruple, Internets mention some 20-30% increase? In which case, the option to upgrade into 128 gb ram is more favorable than the speed increase.
  9. Ah, I am about to purchase a dual xeon system too. Good thing I ran into this thread. The system I had in mind has 4x16GB rams. Reasons are mainly room for upgrades at a later date when needed. Do you mind elaborating on the advantages you get from 8 ram modules, instead of 4?
  10. Singapore, Singapore City Dream Unit Pictures www.dreamunitpictures.com Please and thank you
  11. Aspect ratio is just a matter of setting the resolution. Instead of 1280:720, you can go 2160:720. that would give you 3:1 aspect ratio. 2 Cameras would give you 2 lens warp with 2 centers. that would be odd.
  12. at first glance of picture 1, I think your textures are out of scale. namely, the concrete ceiling and the wooden floor. the grains are too big.
  13. I'd rather go for i7, GtX and a regular ol harddisk. then spend extra cash on new monitor and chair .
