  1. Wow! Thank you so much guys! These links are great. Checking them out now. Thanks again!
  2. Hello guys, I am looking for a little bit of advice. I sometimes do a little bit of CG training for students - just basic level stuff. They have asked if we can create visuals of a theatre as part of the training. The problem is that I don’t have any blueprints or measurements to use for examples or guides. Does anybody know where I could get something like this? I could just use some guesswork but I suspect I would really mess it up without some plans. The project does not need to be 100% accurate. It is nothing done commercially. It is just a training exercise that I do for some students for free in my spare time. Thank you in advance, Ian
  3. Thank you, Tom. I was going to write on here yesterday but I had little time to do so. Anyway, I actually did what you suggested last weekend. I installed a trial of Windows 10 via Bootcamp and installed 3DS Max. So far, so good. All seems to be running a lot smoother than before. I haven't pushed it yet so I don't know how it will perform under heavy load, but my recent tests have been positive. Thank you so much for the suggestion and I hope things are going well up there in the English winter.
  4. Thanks James. I will do. I really appreciate your help.
  5. Ah I think I may have found the RAM issue. I am not too well versed in Parallels but I checked the preferences and I noticed the RAM allocation looked pretty high. I think it may have been maxing stuff out and causing slow downs. I have reduced it and will test to see if the performance is better.
  6. Thanks James. So I did as you described and got some strange response from the RAM. I turned on Parallels and viewed iStat and Activity Monitor on the mac. It show the RAM usage jump from 6GB to 28GB when I open Parallels. So I go into task manager on Windows and surprising it said it was not sucking up much RAM. In Mac’s activity monitor, it shows you a list of all applications that are taking up RAM and nothing much was there!!!???!!! I would calculate maybe 8GB yet 28GB is wired to something but I have no idea what. This only happens when turning on Parallels. The best way I can describe the disappearing models is I will click off the viewport and sometimes, actually quite often, the model disappears for no reason. I then click back in the viewport, orbit around a little and up it pops again. It will also do this when modelling in the viewport sometimes when I click off the model into open space. I assumed it was a graphics card issue. I also used to get a lot of errors that I think were connected to the graphics card too but since upgrading, they seem to have gone. I am using Max 2017. Thanks again for your response. I really appreciate it.
  7. Thank you for responding, James. Yeah I have been getting some strange issues in Max on Parallels. Sometimes the model etc will just disappear for no reason. Moving around the scene is slow and jumpy, which I can only assume is a graphics card or CPU issue. It is also maxing out on RAM even when there is very little loaded in - and I already have 32GB of RAM installed. My current specs are. Mac Pro (Late 2013) Processor: 3.7 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon E5 RAM: 32GB Graphics: AMD FirePro D300 2048 MB Do you have any suggestions? Thanks James.
  8. Hello everybody, I am used to using Maya/Vray for most of my work, but recently I have been offered an interview for a job that also requires some knowledge of 3d Studio Max. I am a Mac user and so have little experience with Max except through parallels which I found did not work well. So I am thinking I should purchase a cheap PC just so I can quickly learn some Max skills. As I know virtually nothing about PCs, what would you advice me to purchase? Can I just buy a machine from the local PC store, or will I be required to build something myself? I only have about $2000 AUD to spend. I hope that will be enough. Thank you in advance. Ian
  9. Thanks Matt... This worked great and got rid of the blotches and grain. My only issue was that the render times increased a lot. I assume that playing with the noise threshold will affect this?
  10. Thank you so much, Matt. I will give these new settings a try now and let you know if I get a better result. I will also throw in a denoiser render element for good measure. So is the DMC noise threshold the one under DMC sampler - advanced -> Adaptive Threshold? Just so I know I am modifying the right part as there is also one called Adaptive Amount = 0.6 and Adaptive Min Samples = 16.
  11. Hey Matt. I appreciate the quick response. I currently have the following: Image sampler noise threshold: 0.004 DMC noise threshold: 0.040 (is this the one under DMC sampler - advanced -> Adaptive Threshold?) Min subdivs = 1 Max subdivs = 10 I will also try to figure out how to use the denoiser render element, as I have not tried this one before.
  12. Thank you so much for the responses guys. I found that some of the problem was caused by having a Vray Light Material turned up too high which seemed to cause some of the strange orange spill that I was getting. I have decided to give Brute Force a go instead of the Irradiance Map. Something I have not tried before. However, I am getting quite a lot more grain with it. What would be some good settings to use with Brute Force to achieve a clean render? Thanks again.
  13. Hello everyone, I am trying to render out a couple of quick interior shots. However, I am getting a lot of weird blotching on the ceiling and in other areas of the images. Does anybody know what i causing this? And how can it be resolved? I am using Vray for Maya. Thank you in advance. Ian
  14. Thank you so much for your reply, Josef. I see that I need to be careful with this. I am also wondering if some artwork is public domain and free to use? I remember once reading that some artwork that was created by an artist who died more than 100 years ago, is free to use (ie. Da Vinci, Van Gogh). However, I am not sure how true that is.
  15. Hello all, I have a quick question for you. When you create a 3d render and you hang a picture on the wall in the render, are you allowed to use any art work? I mean, are there any copyright issues involved if I was to use a piece of established art in the render? Thank you in advance, Ian
