  1. hi all, we are looking for a photographer specialized in architectural photography based in new york. our firm recently completed a retail store on madison av. which will be opening soon, we'd like to have the interior photographed before the shop opens. unfortunately, as we are based in milano, we don't know any photographer that works near, or in new york. I was wondering if any of you know a good professional photographer who might be interested, or could suggest a name. any help is really appreciated, thank you
  2. Hi Rivoli

I am trying to uninstall vray from my computer but i get a message saying that 3ds max is running even though it is not....i have delete all the vray files manually but when i go to control panel remove/add programs i still have a vray licence there and i cannot remove....pluys if i try to reinstall vray i get the same message that 3ds max is still running.....any help please i have seen that you helped someone else some time ago about this issue but i think that my problem is slightly different....

    Thanks in advance

    Regards

  3. what happens is to be expected, and upping the limit won't help a bit, since you only have 500 mb of available memory (putting there 1000, 2000 or 5000 won't make any difference). 500 mb is definitely not enough for displacing, say, wide surfaces of grass even at small resolution. what you can do is get yourself more memory, or upgrade your hardware altogether.
  4. will you take into consideration italian applicants more than willing to relocate?

    LWF/Benchmark

I remember that reading that post over at the chaos forum made me laugh (in a positive way). it kind of summed up what one needs to do when going linear in a very practical way: "just make it darker". anyway, jokes aside, you can use a vray colour map and apply a 2,2 gamma correction to your mats, or you can make diffuse, reflection colours and maps darker by a given value as in lele's method. I guess you can even tone down your gi as other users have suggested. at the end of the day it comes down to what works best for you, I guess one can even live with a washed out output and do any colour adjustment in post.

    LWF/Benchmark

that's to be expected, if a scene is not set up to be rendered linearly, then it will look totally washed out. when working with gamma correction it's important to keep in mind that diffuse colours must be adjusted accordingly. a 128 grey won't look at all like what we're used to consider mid grey once you apply an inverse gamma curve, as I read once on the chaos forum: "just make it darker". this way light will also bounce around less, giving much more contrasted results (instead of that typical evenly lit 2,2 gamma look), and shorter render times.
  7. you can't install any 64 bit application on a 32 bit os. vray 64 requires a 64 bit version of max to run, which in turn needs a 64 bit version of windows.

    Vray Mirror Material

well yes, mirrors don't reflect up to 100% the light they receive. you may even try enabling fresnel with a very high ior value, it may end up being more accurate than the totally reflective surface way.

    Vray Mirror Material

use a vray mat, set the reflect color to 255 white and that's it, a 100% reflective mirror.
  10. a low memory limit it's a problem when rendering displacement, proxies, fur or any other object which require dynamic memory. vray always uses dynamic memory for such objects, it doesn't matter which type you set (auto, static..). but this have nothing to do with a rendering that crashes because it runs out of memory. a good thing to do in those cases it's rendering directly to vray image format unchecking render to memory frame buffer. vray will write the buckets directly on the drive, saving all the memory needed to store the rgba channels and any other element in the vfb (which can be quite a bit with high res images). there are other things one can do to save memory, like using instances, proxies, precalculated maps and so on. but of course it depends on your specific scene. edit: looks like I'm very slow typing, I'd do exactly what Brian said.
  11. just in case you missed it, the vray free and public section have been re opened to anyone. so you can post there even if you are a demo or vray free user.
  12. I've seen loads of flat exteriors and interiors rendered with any renderer out there, but if you find vray's being flatter than others, then you might consider switching to something else.
  13. yep, it is. actually there is a working demo for max 7 too, the one listed as max 8 should do just fine both with 6 and 7.
  14. xp 32 it's limited to 4 gigs of total memory that it splits equally between system and applications, so it can't allocate more than 2 gigs for a single process. actually less than 2 gigs, max for example tend to crash around 1,6 1,8 gig (even less sometime). xp 64 (or any vista 64 for that matter), doesn't have a memory limit so any process can use as much memory as your system can provide (sort of, it actually has a limit but it's very very difficult to get there). of course you also need 64 bit applications, which is not a problem, at least as max and vray are concerned. even 32 bit applications can make use of up to 4 gigs of memory under xp 64, which is twice the limit they have on xp 32 anyway. saving memory it's always good though, and it's a healthy way of thinking. when you run out of physical memory, even if max doesn't crash, it starts getting real slow.
