  1. it's probably best to re-install the plugins but if you know what folders they are copied into you can usually just copy them over. to copy the prefs simply copy C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Autodesk\3dsMax\2012 - 64bit\enu to C:\Users\shane\AppData\Local\Autodesk\3dsMaxDesign\2012 - 64bit\enu the UI will look like it was in Max (default of dark) but the additional features for Exposure and Civil View will be there.
  2. thanks for bringing this to our attention, a fix is being investigated for an upcoming 3ds Max 2013 Product Update (new name for hotfixes/service packs).
  3. We work very closely with Chaos and other partners to make sure the transition to the new release is as smooth as possible. This year for the first time ever we had partners posting their beta builds to our beta program. This is why you see some of their UI in the sneak peeks. 80% of our beta customers said they were doing production testing with the beta and having partners like Chaos so closely involved was a big part of why they were able to do this. I can't speak to the Chaos roadmap directly but I imagine if you ask vlado or others there they might tell you when to expect an update from them.
  4. The gamma issues with network rendering I don't think were really a problem of BB, but I know this was worked on in 2013 along with the gamma issues with certain outputs like png. Both should be resolved now. There are over 500 legacy bug fixes in the 2013 release, the largest that I can remember, so look for a lot of little annoying things like this to be cleaned up. Not all of them but we did our best to find the ones users in general considered important. We will continue to issue product updates for the 2012 release and potentially older ones. The first should be available on the FCS day of 2013 to enable the save to previous feature to work with 2013 files saved to 2012. There are other fixes in this update with more details to come soon, we are just putting the final wraps on it next week. 2013 does save to previous for 2012, 2011, and 2010 now. There likely will be a product update for 2011 and 2010 to better support this also. From this point forward save to previous will only support 3 versions back, therefore this will be the last release that saves to the 2010 format.
  5. are there any differences between the hardware configs of the two machines? are the graphics cards the same and the same drivers? are the screen resolutions the same and same number of monitors on both systems?
  6. http://screencast.com/t/5vINuXion This issue has been around since v1, largely because it's a tricky design issue. You can go to ortho and back to perspective, as someone suggested, and it removes the correction, but there is already an expected pop in fov when toggling between these options. If we choose to go from camera corrected to perspective wo/ out the correction there would be a pop and some might thing this is also a defect since it only occasionally would occur, would this be an acceptable behavior vs the current one?
  7. an FX3800 is an older gen card (i know it's not that old I have several) and if you only have one GPU in the system you will have limited success with ActiveShade iray. You are working with limited resources, 1GB GPU mem -192 CUDA cores @ a much slow compute rate than fermi cards. both what you are doing within the viewport and what you are doing with ActiveShade will be fighting for these limited resources at the same time, result is bound to be a poor experience. Also read the help docs, they explain what is and isn't supported with the new ActiveShade iray workflow. And no i'm not saying you need to go spend mega $ to use ActiveShade iray. there are many low cost fermi cards on the market today that will provide a much better experience for you, plus you could still use the FX3800 to drive the viewport.
  8. you also need to provide us more information about your HW config. if you try to follow the simple steps in this video what do you see posted in the "Render Message Window"? http://www.screencast.com/t/WLCN3GBfsr (as stated by others in this thread you don't need an extreme machine to render with iray, it will work in CPU mode even. I just happen to have a super nice BOXX 4880 system I'm doing a review on.)
  9. We have yet to see a reproducible test case of the note track issue continuing to occur in a properly updated 3ds Max 2010 or later release. Usually the HF/SP is not installed or the data was already dirty to begin with, which the script cleans for you. if you have something that repro's please send it here: http://www.autodesk.com/3dsmax-defectsubmission
  10. there are 100 species of vegetation available for free on Autodesk Seek http://bit.ly/pISNhl
  11. it's just like capturing the image with an SLR. you have find other creative ways to get the "look" you are after.
  12. Soumitra you will have to narrow down the variables for us to properly help. Did you go through some of the suggested tests I posted before? there's no magic number to point you to, you'll have to go through the dance of narrowing down what makes the most sense for your quality/performance goals. If you don't want to do the magic numbers dance then that is what iray is for.
  13. Use a material override w/ a basic grey material on everything. Is it rendering as expected? If no look somewhere else for the problem. Light samples, numbers of lights, shadow settings, gi or fg settings, any number of things. If yes then remove the override and replace the suspect materials with something basic and test again. Again it could be any number of things and yes these materials are way more complex than you would think they are. Even the adsk wall paint is a very complex shader under the hood. These materials where built with the intent to be as physically accurate as possible and allow the simplest settings to modify them. This comes at the cost of render time and having the ability to performance tweak them, but with the benefit of ease of use and quality output.
  14. Correct. And if you set this too low things won't look right. It's usually best to use at least 4.
  15. Can you record a screen capture of the issue please? You can use Jing and post the link here for us to evaluate. Thanks!
