  1. I dont suppose this entire script is available online anywhere? Im not proficient enough in maxscript to construct it from that snippet haha.
  2. Hi, is there any way of stopping the ridiculous amount of materials in revit coming across to max? There are scores of identical materials coming through from architect models into our max scenes. Is anyone aware of a decent cleanup or 'merge similar materials' script or something? Its a very messy system.
  3. I cant download any attachments from the site, it seems to just bring up a blank page as if the file doesnt exist on the servers. Any ideas? Thanks
  4. What i ususally do is create a mental ray material then assign the surface slot as an AO material and use that material as an override. The default settings of the AO material need tweaking most of the time. I usually set the distance to about 3' (36.0) as it gives a nice falloff but it depends on your units setup. Take it into photoshop and set it to multiply and change the opacity until youre happy with it. It helps alot to define the edges and corners. Good luck!
  5. Maybe try some HDRI Lighting with GI. It will give you really nice soft shadows. Couple that with a spotlight positioned in the direction of the sun to add in some hard shadows. If you dont want to do that maybe add an Ambient occlusion pass over the top of the render to give some nice detail shadows. With the HDRI too it will give some nice variations in your reflections making it much more believable!
  6. Even in the viewport they are burnout white. Im not entirely sure why he sets them so high. personal preference maybe to work within the bounds of 0 - 1.0.
  7. Im new to Vray too and Vray RT is fine but Vray Adv is what i would use for actual renders i only really ever use RT for activeshade. If the render is grainy try adding a reflection, lighting and GI element to the render and check to see where the noise is coming from. If its in the GI increase your GI samples. if its in the lighting increase light subdivs and if its in reflection then increase your material reflection subdivisions. Hope that helps Jack
  8. Thanks anyway ill make use of RT for now. Activeshade is better anyway Thanks again.
  9. Riiight that makes sense now. So thats solved the exposure issue. The viewport shading problem is still happening though. Am i using the dome light correctly? Is it used in the same way as a MR skylight or does it need to be above the groundplane? Thanks for your help Jack
  10. I can do that fine. I'm actually using one of peters skies. But it is just completely white when I set it as the viewport background as if the brightness has been bumped up far too much and the lighting in the viewport doesn't work at all in realistic mode the model is still completely black so I can't see it in realtime. It works in the render but I have nothing to judge the brightness in the bviewport its all guesswork until I render.
  11. Hi, Im trying to take some steps into vray and the one thing i just plain cant figure out is hdri's they are far too bright in the viewport and the dome light doesnt light my scene when the texture is applied everything is still pitch black. Why is it so much more complicated to set up HDRI lighting in Vray than in Mental Ray? Any help would be much appreciated Jack
  12. I have found the brick walls useful as well as the birds. especially the birds actually they add a nice background element to any cg shot ive tried them on.
  13. http://www.debrismaker.aarondabelow.com/v1/ Aaron Debalow has created a brilliant new version of his debris plugin (which doesnt just generate debris) This plugin seems like it would benefit the Archvis community for external detailing and animated visuals. It generates incredibly detailed Brick walls with different brick types, logs twigs, bricks flocks of pigeons flying, loads of really really useful stuff for visuals.
  14. Thank you, youve answered it perfectly! That site is seems excellent for what i want. and once the actual structure of the building is built i guess i can alter the details to make it less of a copy as you suggested. thanks for the info! Good luck with your portfolio! Jack
  15. Something i have found on networked desktop machines running backburner is that occasionally it will really mess up and it will be running about 20 processes named backburner taking up gigabytes of ram. these disappear when server is closed. its almost as if it isnt flushing the previous frame from memory. This usually only happened after about 5-7 hours of solid rendering.
