  1. Yes, it just crashed at render though. I assume the area was too large to cope...
  2. Displacement settings attached I'm using 2D mapping, 3D mapping wouldn't render without crashing. I'm using it for a large ground area though so as I understand it, 2D mapping is the best option?
  3. I usually get this error when I have something corrupt in the scene... Try turning everything off in the layers and rendering. If it renders you have a corrupt model.
  4. Try changing the default geometry in settings from static to dynamic.
  5. I'm using 2d mapping on the vray displacement mod in 3ds max 2016 with vray 3.3 and am finding that the render is covered in black spots. This is fixed by reducing the resolution, but then the displacement flattens down to nothing. I've tried increasing the precision but this makes absolutely no difference. Any ideas?
  6. Thanks Chris, I didn't try with UV Mapping, I just added the falloff map to the density. I thought the gizmo fall off radius was the controller, but it doesn't seem to do anything Thanks for your reply Brendan, obviously I've looked at tutorials but I haven't been able to find out what I need. Any links to specific tutorials you've found on this?
  7. I want to make a graduated fog, dense at the top and clearer at the bottom. I tried adding a falloff map to the density but this didn't seem to work?
  8. The transparency hasn't changed, literally the only difference is 'cast shadows'. There is a fog colour to it, which would add shadows through the water, but I can't seem to get it to ignore shadows (or react to them in a visually similar way). Affect shadows is on, but either way that makes no difference overall. Any other ideas?
  9. I'm trying to render a scene with puddles of water, I have two planes with noise modifiers, one with a ground texture, the other with a 'water' texture. I also have a vray sphere light acting as a studio light and I would like this to cast shadows. When the light is set to cast no shadows the water renders perfectly, however, when I turn shadows on it renders as a black lump. I've tried excluding the two planes but this makes no difference. I've tried ticking affect shadows in the material rollout, and unticking double sided, basically everything I can think of! Any more ideas? I've attached the region renders as an example.
  10. Unfortunately not! I can edit the length of the fur, but not the gravity or bend. It's either straight up or straight down. It's as though it's frozen it with 1 section to the hair strand, but increasing the knots makes absolutely no difference. Interestingly I noticed the same result when I flipped the normals on the spline-plane? Simply taking the modifier off didn't do anything, it only worked when I unlinked the fur and then reapplied without the normal modifier.
  11. I've got an imported site from Revit that I need to make grassy with Vray Fur. I've isolated the sections I need and collapsed them to edit poly (also tried edit mesh) but when I apply fur, although the fur applies and appears in the viewport, the parameters are not editable and the fur renders standing straight up. I tried with a new spline-edit poly and this worked fine! I don't want to mess around re-drawing out the grassy sections if at all possible. Why can I not edit the vray fur on the imported geometry??? Is there a way round this?
  12. Thanks very much for your reply, I was using the VRayIES but it turned out the problem was as simple as having the global tint switched off!
  13. I'm using 3ds Max 2015 and Vray 3.0. Just starting to look at vray IES lighting so I did a test inside a box which worked fine. However, now I'm trying to use it inside a scene it renders nothing. It's an interior scene with a HDRI outside. Turned this off and now all I get is a black render. I've tried ramping the IES settings up to the absolute maximum and still nothing. What's going on? Scene is modelled to scale, units set to mm, system units inches. Vray physical cam (changing the exposure does nothing) GI - Irradiance & Light cache I'm sure I'm just missing something really obvious, any ideas?! ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Turns out I had global lighting turned off, turning it on fixed the issue.
