    Lon,

I've lost my link and have been looking for a tutorial authored by someone at Neoscape that pictures a couple of women sitting at an outdoor dining arrangement with multiuse retail/residential architecture in the background.

I've been looking for months with no success. Do you know the tutorial?

Sorry to bother you with this kind of question but I found it, determined its importance to me and then lost it!

I have a daughter that moved to Cambridge last year. She's been working at the Berklee School of Music there and will probably enter a masters program there in the spring.

    Thanks,

    Gary

  3. Man, I just caught wind of this whole thread, and I don't even know where to begin. I'm a little late into it, and I don't want to begin to stir the pot all over again, but I can't help myself. First and foremost -Jeff dedicates a tremendous amount of time and energy to his work AND cgarchitect.com, and we should thank him for what he's done for our industry. Case closed. Jeff, I owe you a beer - as always. Then, I read this from Ihab - "the only time Lon grohs comes up with an amazing rendering in two days is when the model was already done by someone else before that. most of their renderings or at least the good ones have three names signed under them." What? - Let's not make any uneducated blanket statements about these matters. Ihab, I've worked with you before. I've even hired you to model for me, and I respect the work you are capable of producing - but unless you've spent a day in my moccasins, please refrain from making comments like the one above.
  4. One thing to consider is that the Max 7.5 update needs to be installed on every machine across your farm in order to net render. As soon as I installed it I could no longer see the non 7.5 nodes for net rendering. I also ran into the missing UI issues as well. I'm hoping they will rerelease it with that part ironed out. It's not my idea of fun to config my UI and then update it over a bunch of machines. For now, I'm gonna wait until I hear more before I switch over our entire network. Has anyone found any issues with 7.5 and VRay? I don't know why there would be, but one never knows.
  5. Hey Ernest - thanks for the feedback. It is really a 2 point perspective, but the curtain wall is angled out, which could be giving the illusion of a 3 point? Everywhere else the verticals are straight. Typically for an interior, I would move the vantage point lower as well, but the space is so long with multiple levels of activity (ie. the bar), so I kept it at eye height. I agree that the polys were approaching laughable amounts, but this was an opportunity to test the threshold of the new VRay system. It was a little bit of an R&D exercise to find the limits. The good news is that it can be done with even higher counts, which may come into play the next time we animate an entire city like the Big Dig movie. FYY - The poly counts were huge, mostly because of the woven chairs, and the place settings - which could've been optimized by 66% pretty easily.
  6. First of all - what a surprise to hear from Jorge, that was a pleasant surprise. Second - I must apologize for our lack of previous forum postings. The renderings took about 4 hours across 10 Dual AMD Athlon 2800s. I was psyched to get VRay's Distributed Rendering going with Max 7 and have it work so well. There's a great post on vray.info about the pitfalls of Distributed Rendering, and it's right on the money. Though, it handled this 6+ million poly scene very well. The renders were 4800x2400 with some pretty high AA settings, glossy reflections on a few items, and Vray's raytraced reflections for almost everything. That's one of the beautiful things about VRay - it renders reflections extremely fast. I used GI with high enough settings to avoid artifacts, and then a VERY faint occlusion pass in paint. (Jeff's well trained eye picked out the occlusion pretty quickly - nice work, Jeff.) Everything else was done in paint. The frosted glass panels, a few lighting effects and so on. A few last minute 3D items were composited - like the furniture inside the private dining area way in the back and the oysters on the bar, but that's about it. Cheers - Lon
