  1. I wanted to mention ryzen but I wasn't sure. Since it's pretty new I would wait for multiple feedbacks when it comes to rendering with V-Ray before considering it. I really wish though
  2. First of all, thanks a lot for the feedback ! I understand you are more on the side of an overall good vrdesigner, with or without an architectural background. I could compare that to the 3D artists working on renders for a 2d output but now for a VR output. The good thing that I see in that analogy is that we could get the selling image as it is. I'm thinking of those nice renders we see in winning architectural competitions that end up completely different once built. Because it's VR there are no more constraints of weather, light, gravity, (cost),... So I kind of don't understand your point of view on realistic lights. Why not go all out with the glowing experience ? Why keeping it realistic ? Is it related to that comfortable user experience you talked about ? I was thinking, because you are talking about planning; are architects used in the gaming industry (world environment modelling) for marketing ? Again I really appreciate the feedback.
  3. Hi everyone, I would like to have some input on a complicated matter. I'm having a debate class here at the university on "architecture-shopping-VR" VR can easily be related to shopping but what is confusing is the place of the architect. Are architects relevant when it comes to designing virtual worlds ("shopping world")? Is there a new kind of collaboration ? A new kind of architect ? Sure the architect is a specialist when it comes to "designing space" but is this enough to be contestant in the VR world ? Some artists might be even more relevant then ...? We can't find relevant information so it's turning into a collection of personal opinions I personally have no experience with VR but the debate started off on those new "Virtual Shopping Malls" and "virtual stores". Hopefully some of you have had experience (maybe professional) and can give us some feedback. I wish you the best !!!
  4. Can you give us a budget ? That would help. So far I'd say go with an all-around setup (gamer type 7700k gtx1060 16gb) but depending on budget you might consider better or worse options. For ram, go for 16gb at first, and if needed go 32gb, it's the easiest part to upgrade. Might I add, consider the price of the monitor you want.
  5. Hello cgarchitect forum ! My name is Thomas and I'm right now in the middle of my third year in architecture in Liege. This is hopefully my last year in Belgium as I hope to get a master degree abroad (I might start a topic about that "what school to go to for a valuable master degree in europe") I wasn't much of a tech guy and loved to use scale models as my primary way of com but evetually, I started using my computer last year with autocad and I'm now obssessed with mastering every programs I put my hands on Right now my workflow is pretty simple autocad>sketchup/some rhino>vray>photoshop>indesign. I took on Rhino this year to hopefully get to grasshopper this summer and had a few tries with 3dsmax without big success (but I'm gonna get there ) Even with all that I'm still relying more on my physical scale models (research and com) but at least now I'm having a lot of fun with my panels as well ! See you in the next posts, I hope at some point I may be of help to anyone btw sorry for any english mistake I may have done
  6. Hello everyone, My name is Thomas, I'm a student in architecture (3rd year) at the university of Liege in Belgium and the answer to this question may actually help countless students in the futur For all the projects we have, the teachers give us reference dwg of the context with elevation data (they use LIDAR) as well as cadastre data. Those are actually part of a continuous map of all southern belgium (PICC : informatic project for continuous cartography). Here for example the city of Liege : http://we.tl/ASHA1b8qeY (I used WeTransfer for hosting because the file was too big to be attached) I think it's just a cloud of points which are linked with poly in order to make sense in plan view but is a pain to read in 3D So the problem is that no one in school (including the teachers apparently) knows how to deal with that data. So all we've been doing for years is : in autocad : 1)flatten the image 2)recontour manually what interests us 3)import to sketchup 4) click on each line to get the height data in autocad 5) extrude plan in sketchup with the height data As you can imagine, modelling parts of the city we work on takes us an awful lot of time and our urban projects are just getting bigger and bigger. The teachers I asked are telling me that's the only way but I'm convinced it's not. I'm sure there are other more efficient ways to deal with that data. The goal here is to get a 3d model to work on and eventually excell files with height data for each building (I've seen that several years ago in an architecture office but I wasn't very concerned at the time and lost contact since). So we'd really appreciate any advice/comment/solution you could give on this matter. Softwares we have access to are autocad, sketchup pro, rhino, 3dsmax, archicad, revit and a few others I can't remember right now. Sorry for all the english mistakes I may have made :/ and Thank you
