  1. Phil, One of the big catches is that you may need to go deep into family objects to make sure the correct materials are applied. If you have a family that has a parameter variable set to , that geometry will receive a generic AutoDesk material when exported to 3Ds Max. Window system panel types are notorious for this issue. So try to avoid having any family objects that don't have correct material assignments in their parameter settings.
  2. The Revit FBX export to active FBX link import in 3D Studio Max 2016 is messed up. AutoDesk needs to fix it ASAP. I've been using this work flow in all of my architectural visualization work for more than 6 years now. The scale issue had always been that Revit units are set to feet, 3D Studio Max and AutoCAD default to inches. Therefore you need to change the 3DS Max system units (not the display units) to feet in order to get the correct geometry and texture scale import. However, for some reason this setting is now distorted in 3D Studio Max 2016. If you link an FBX file into Max 2016 with system units set to feet your geometry will come in at a scale factor of 3048% This happens to be the conversion factor for cm to feet. Therefore, as strange as it sounds, Max 2016 system units need to be set to cm now when importing FBX files from Revit. Geometry will then be imported at the correct scale. However, that's not the end of the work around.... You'll find that the geometry scales correctly, but texture mapping coordinates are now distorted. My work around for this issue to to select all "geometry" and apply a reset xform modifier. Do not collapse the modifier stack for the FBX geometry and the xform modifier will be re-applied to any reloaded FBX geometry. Lastly... You'll need to remember that if you add new materials and or geometry that was not in a currently linked FBX file, you'll need to add the reset xform modifier to the new geometry modifer stack. Really frustrating. Hopefully AutoDesk will get this resolved in the next service pack.
  3. Hi Devine,

I caught the forum thread where you where inquiring about 3rd party render manager systems. I've been pulling my hair out trying to get Backburner 2012 working on my simple 3 machine home network. I'm running windows 7 prof (64) everything is setup on a home network. Firewalls are shut off. I'm working on 3DS Max Design 2012 Service Pack 2. Installed on all three machines. I've tried anything and everything to get BB to work. I can get the servers to render if they are run manually, but even then they are extremely crash happy. Sporadic errors off and on. And BB has yet to save a .fgm file. The servers will render final gather jobs out, but will not save the files.

Pretty disgusted with AutoDesk. Have you happened to find a solution. If not have you switched to a 3rd party package?

    I'm looking at Royal Renderer.

    Thanks for any input.

  4. Hello all I'm looking at purchasing a new system. I plan to purchase a workstation, a couple render nodes, and a laptop. The laptop would not need to be a mobile workstation, more for marketing. I'll be using Revit for Architectural modeling, 3DS Max for 3D modeling, animation and rendering (Mental Ray / Iray) and Adobe products for post. I pretty much know what I want as far as component specifications, and my budget is a little flexible. I've looked at the following companies for pricing, but it seems to be pretty varied. Here's the companies I've looked at: Boxx Tech Dell Alienware (Dell) ibuypower Cyberpower Digital Storm Maingear Origin V3 I'm also considering the lease option from Boxx. Has anyone had experience with that program? Good? Bad? Any other Companies you think I should look at? Since I'm going it solo, I'm concerned about quality of build / product, and customer service. Anyone want to offer up some feedback on the above companies? To Keep it easy use a scale of 1 to 10, 1 = pathetic, 10 = superior: How is their build quality? How is the quality of their components? How is their customer service? How is their response / turn around time on fixes? Thanks for any and all feedback. I need to make a purchase within the next few days. ezb
  5. The visual composition is great. Good balence and porportions.
  6. The fenestration design on the building is a trip. Fantastic street scene. I like the effectiveness of the white sky. Good work

  8. Interesting project. Thanks for posting. Nice work
  9. I would consider architectural visualization to be any piece of digital art work that utilizes 3D in its construct. I think that the nominees are much more about the ideals of architecture in all aspects of creativity, space, scale, material, lighting, texture and color than a great majority of posted gallery images. However, I would like to see a greater variety of overall mood. It seems as though the dark and mysterious have the edge. Of course the light and airy may not have put up much of a fight this year. I’m pleased with the nominations. Spectacular visions. Memorable enough to influence even the most mundane client commission.

  12. Love the contrast of the light coming from the window. The Black and White is great. I would choose to revisit the art above the bed. Your eye really gets sucked in on it. Maybe a soft photo or just less contrast in the pattern? It might also help to have something reflected in the mirror other that just wall pattern. At first glance it comes off looking like a painting. Only the subtle refection of the two bottles on the chest of drawers reveal that it's not. good work though.
  13. Nice work Think. The variety of compostion is great. I really like the context that you provided for each tile. Just enough to make it interesting, but not overwhelming. Were you able to compare the results of lighting effects that you were getting on your 3D materials with those of real-world installed product. Or did you just have the sample products to work with? Is this Vray or Mental Ray? or neither?
  14. I like the material depth and contrast. Nice composition. I'm assuming that you'd like some CC so... I'm catching a bit of a tile pattern in your curb. And because of the rusticated nature of your ground materials, I think you could add a little more "character" to the curb and sidewalk. It looks too perfect. I'm also seeing a strange result in your indirect light on the materials in the window well. In the corner the concrete gets significantly darker but the brick doesn't change.
  15. I like the soft touch that your work has. I think that you should look at utilizing 3D vegetation though, as the flat nature of your trees in a few a the shots is a bit distracting. I wouldn't worry about the realism aspect. It's good to see individuality expressed in imagry. Keeping working on it.
