  1. Rhino is the tool of choice for complex curves in archtiecture (short of Catia). It is highly accurate and can export drawings that can be used in construction drawings. maya and max are extremely difficult to achieve this level of accuracy. If you just want to make pretty images, Max/Maya are fine (and I am not saying you can't use the drawings for CDs, it's just not nearly as precise as Rhino). FYi, Maya is much cheaper than max for the basic model ($2000, if I recall correctly).
  2. Well, if your renderer won't do it well, you will have to get one that does, correct? FormZ also does it fairly well.
  3. This is a great renderer: http://www.finalrender.com/products/products.php?UD=10-7888-35-788&PID=37 It's part of Final Render Stage 1. You need Max, Maya or Cinema to use it, though. You can render out almost anything as separate vector files (like Illustrator). You can also combine the vectors with GI and reflections (I recently made some images that look very similar to Sketch up's images, but included reflections and accurate shadows.).
  4. I'd be interested in learning about your work flow to. I have always just saved out as a dwg (from FormZ), then imported into Max. I assume you are just linking the dwg? I would also look at Final Render. They just released Service Pack 3, which has some great updates. A new version should be out sometime that is supposed to be standalone also. No idea which programs they'll choose to have it work with. Right now, I think it's Max/Viz, Cinema and Maya. Keep in mind that any interior animations will take a TON of time to render, Vray, Final Render, Brazil, or anything using GI. 10 minutes a frame is fast, easily going straight up from there. Also, make sure your firm is charging a ton for this service. It's bad enough that the architecture profession let's itself get ripped off by clients all the time. This is a valuable skill and service, and you should really be charging more than you do for architecture to do it (simply because architects charge so little). I am speaking as an architect, by the way, that does mostly professional renderings.
  5. Use XTune. It's not that great, and a pain in the butt to be honest, but it works somewhat.
  6. Get yourself the fastest dual processor you can. I'd skip the PURE card- big bucks and doesn't support GI yet (to my knowledge), it's just to specific for general purposes. If he'll buy more than one, get one great machine, best processors (I am still a intel guy, and only Dell simply due to their onsite support and insanely quick repair times), then get a second machine (or two) for rendering. I have several machines that I work on, I'd be 50% less productive if I only have one machine to work on. Get a big screen, too, it helps tremendously. I love Dell's 24" - I dont' like dual monitors (personal preference, but 24" is prefect size for 3D, imho)
  7. Thanks, but I think I'll just buy one. Actually, what I was trying to links was a free Nano in a C4D model (it's black). But yeah, if I can't find a nice one with headphone/ear buds I might buy one. There's a nice example of a Nano, Ipod, and shuffle for about $25-35. Not cheap, but some are a lot more. These are for a college condo interior rendering, so having an ipod and a nice laptop would make a difference, I think.
  8. Anyone with C4D want to export this baby? :-) http://www.turbosquid.com/FullPreview/Index.cfm/ID/301055
  9. Just sent you an email - thanks!
  10. Anyone have a good Apple laptop model they'd like to share? Or a link to a site? TurboSquid has a few, but I'd like to get a free one, if it's out there. A nice PC laptop would work, too. All mine look like they're 10 years old. Thanks
  11. or go bankrupt :/ Cool of them, eh? Such nice, fair folks over at Autodesk!
  12. http://www.cgdatabank.com - look at Free Data. Not perfect, but obviously displays. Cars are superb for arch viz, too, and incredibly cheap (last time I bought some they were less than $10 each). Fairly low poly, but great accuracy. You have to mirror the interior for the US, though, but no big deal.
  13. Post your final render settings. Too much ambient light, not enough contrast. How is the scene being lit?
