Hi
First of all sorry for the late response.
Unfortunately the site is in it`s downhill (from my point of view) but the experience is important and a new one will emerge. This time it will be entirely my initiative.
A few years before the site I had my first experience with interactive 3D in Director (at that time Macromedia) and I`ve choose this product because I had some multimedia productions made with it.
What you need to know:
1. Export into w3d is very well documented and with many choices for 3D Software
1.1. 3DS Max from version 3 to the latest, some of them might need an update from the Autodesk site
1.2. be careful at naming objects, materials, groups etc – no duplicates or you `ll have export errors
1.3. not all types of materials are supported, unfortunately no bumps and other goodies – use blinn materials
1.4. transparency supported with 32 bit (RGB + alpha channel) PNG file
1.5. group the animations
1.6. use the advanced exporter utilities for analyzing, compression ratio, testing, preview and check for errors
1.7. about baked textures you have to be careful with them - especially the size and distribution on elements
2. Authoring with Director
2.1. You need a bit of knowledge of Director and Lingo programming
2.2. ChromeLib is a powerfull add-on for 3D in Director
2.3. You will need a bit of programming (I can give you the code which needs some minor tweaks which I can explain) for collision detection and external resources if you need (like textures)
2.4. Director it`s good for combining all sorts of media (2D, flash, images, audio, video, etc.) even in large quantities
2.5. good options for streaming media
Now the dark side of the moon:
- Director 11 has support for DirectX9 but not so efficient
- not enough tools for a designer
- the upgrade from Director MX 2004 to version 11 which took 4 years of development is not by far so worthy (in part DirectX9, unicode, Vista and latest MacOs suport)
From my point of view Director 11 is a huge disappointment because the entire community was expecting a huge leap after so many years, but it seems like Adobe it stretched a bit too far (even with some other products). It remains to see if the next version it will come back in force.
At this moment the developing team for Director is in Bangalore.
For my next project I`m searching for some candidates who might replace Director in my pipeline.
If you need any help feel free to contact me mvitega@yahoo.com.
Best regards
Mihai
Hi,
I just see your popwebcity, its very impresive. You have good experience with adobe director, so I decided to write a massage to you. I have few questions
What is the work flow to produce a interactive architectural visualization for web?
Is director has a built in engine, or I have to use a third party engine.
I work with 3D Max, Is adobe director fully support max format? Acrobat 3D don't support .max files, it support .3ds files. Does it support baked texture?
How much codding it requres for developing a project like popwebcity?
