  1. You cannot apply 3D grass on the terrain by using the terrain editor. You have to assign that terrain a material in sketchup or revit. However you can apply landscape grass (the 3D kind) via the landscape material. You do not want to have the actual 3D grass everywhere because it will slow down the machine and the renders. Lumion does not limit the textures, so I am not sure what you mean. And what exactly are you looking to do with your site plan?
  2. We utilize Lumion in our standard workflow. It is quick to learn and the results are fantastic, provided that the person generating the images, animations, panoramas shows restraint. If you are looking to share with your clients, you can use My Lumion for cloud view of your project. This will include still images and linked panoramic images. This allows you to control the client and only see what you have designed. Also, there is the Revit Live link to Lumion that allows for on-demand changes. The one thing I did not see discussed here is price (I may have missed it). Lumion runs about $3500 per seat (free upgrades for one year and discounted major upgrade once per year) and pulls the license from the internet. Enscape will run about $680 per year for floating license. Remember its not the software, its the user.
  3. Lumion is easy to learn and if done correctly can look fantastic. Not to mention the render times are quite low. Unreal will be a huge learning curve, but fantastic stuff produced.
  4. You will need to go into the CAD file itself, if possible. Typically the topo lines are on separate layers (major, minor, etc.) If the topo is actually in 3D, then yes you can utilize what has already been done. You can do this by going into a site plan view and creating the topo from import. Then when asked which layer to use be sure to specify the correct topo layer. If the topo lines are not correct (i.e. height information is not correct) then you will manually have to place the topo lines. If you have your express tools installed in CAD, you can type "FLATTEN" in the command prompt.
  5. I know this is really late, but you will have to manually assume the topo at the retaining walls. All topo should essentially stop and redirect at each wall or building. If you have access to Revit, this would be the best to use, IMO.
  6. When using Sketchup for Lumion, save out a copy of Sketchup to 2017 or earlier (depending on version of Lumion) and import it. Do not export to DAE. Dae from sketchup creates issues with groups and components.
  7. Late reply...sorry. An easy thing to do would be setup a wall schedule based on materials. Then adjust the schedule to sort by material. Then make sure you uncheck itemize. Finally, open a 3D view and the wall schedule at the same time and click the alucabond in the schedule and it should highlight them all in the model.
  8. Hey everyone. I have been looking into modeling roadways, on and off ramps, overpasses, etc. for a few clients. What software are people using? I looked into Infraworks 360, but it does not seem like it is really conducive to quality. My current workflow is modeling package to Lumion for animations. Any help is appreciated. Thank you
  9. Hello all. I am doing a little research into VR and the ability to add popup information. So, I am thinking about creating a scene and rendering out to VR for Occulus Rift. I want to add info for the client such as cost/sf, or materials, etc. when they look at a floor or wall for example. With all of the new software hitting the market I am at a loss. Is there software that can do this? Thinking of rendering from either Lumion or 3D Max. TIA.
  10. Thanks for posting this. I was on the fence between the 980TI and the 1070. I ordered both from Newegg yesterday. I am planning on returning the 980TI unopened. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814126109 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814487160 I am curious though. The 980TI has 2816 cores and the 1070 has 1920 cores. Is this going to impact Vray RT? I mainly bought it for the 8GB memory (Lumion), but it would be a nice bonus if the performance is as good in Vray RT as the 980TI.
  11. Before going through and making massive changes to materials, why not try to use the Vray light meter? http://viscorbel.com/using-vraylightmeter-to-estimate-the-exposure/ I do this for my scenes and it makes a great starting point for camera exposure. Also, can you post your settings? You may be able to set your scene up differently with color mapping and gamma to help reduce the harshness of the shadows and increase the amount of GI in the space.
  12. Just for my own knowledge, why would you choose the surfacebook over a laptop? Is it the stylus input? I just see the starting cost of $1500 and know that for the same cost I could get a larger laptop with much better specs. Again, just curious.
  13. I for one enjoy these types of images, but only for a minute. What I am really tired of is the same old real estate/developer images, as stated previously. Nearly every client I have wants a daylight exterior showing this, that, and the other - equally lit, little contrast, little interest, some entourage, but not enough to make believable, bright blue skies with few clouds, etc. This to me is getting old...very old. I look to some of these images, not necessarily the stark white interiors and context-less exteriors, but more the surreal images, with a mood and passion. These are my mental masturbation before I return to reality. I just do not have time to create these stunning images. On another note, I have one client whom I know personally that asks me to basically design their proposed project with ABC program. Those jobs are awesome because it allows for a good fee and I get to break the emotional chains that bind me...for I am free...
  14. I have worked this way for so long (before archiving was in Max) that I just don't want to change. Meanwhile I am the first to scream that change is good.
