  1. I heard that! Sometimes when you're hungry though you gotta take it up the pooper.
  2. Curious where do you work? What's your experience as a sole proprietor?
  3. That is a broad brush there. There are two basic types of US based Viz houses that I see. One is the company that does houses for $395.00, just Google 3D renderings to see, the other people like Labtop, DBOX etc. There is not a lot in between. The in between work for the most part meaning better than the $395.00 guy not as pricey or good as DBOX is being outsourced most of the time. As far as using overseas talent in my own work I didn't get into the Architecture field to be a broker. If I wanted to do that it wouldn't be in Architecture.
  4. Thanks for the reply. I looked up salary in Prague as an example IT Administration/ Operations Euro's per month 1 400 minimum salary. That doesn't cover my rent. The problem I run into here in Los Angeles is clients want to pay China (as an example) prices and get American convenience, meaning location, response time, speaking the language etc.
  5. I don't have a clue. How much are top Viz houses getting for an image? Unless they and others are doing high volume I just don't understand how they're doing well? Maybe the big Viz places aren't that profitable and only have a staff because of the work load? There's a difference between having a lot of people and work and being profitable.
  6. Thanks TJ. I don't want clients anymore, you're right there is no more fun in this for me. Not sure if that is still Gensler policy but it was when I worked there.
  7. Both. When I worked at Gensler their policy for paying vendors was you get paid when we get paid. A lot people I know have that same mentality only they don't tell you that when they hire you, they just lie and jerk you around. I build Architectural models and did a job for someone I have known for 30 years they said they would bring a check when they picked up the model...no check. I had to chase them for an additional 3 weeks to get paid and threaten small claims action. This hasn't been the exception lately it's been the norm.
  8. I agree with most of that. I am running into clients and associates I have done business with for decades lying to me about retainers and final bills, nickle and diming me over everything to the point where I spend more time chasing them for money than working on their projects. The business in the last 20 years has really changed from when I started out. It' no longer worth my time, that's for me personally.
  9. This is a business for younger people, I did my time in the barrel. I don't have the desire to work 60 hours a week anymore in a Architecture firm or 3D firm. Personally I only wanted to make enough money to leave the field altogether, the Architecture field that is, but my plan didn't pan out as I had hoped. So, now I'm leaving the field anyhow but not in the fashion I wanted to.
  10. Los Angeles - I'm certainly not the best in the business but better than $10.00 an hour!
  11. Yep, survival makes people do things that they probably would be better off not doing.
  12. In my experience increasing quality does not retain a client at a premium price when they can get "good enough" for less. The bulk of the work in the industry is not the premiere jobs that DBOX and others get it is the run of the mill project.
  13. My mother didn't complain when her boyfriend beat the crap out of her either. Those companies are at the top of the field and maybe have 50 people combined so that's not a good analogy.
  14. A couple of things I think, one Architects fees are going down they face being a commodity too. Second is once you set a industry standard such as $500.00 for a house exterior then that is what is expected regardless of where you live.
