  1. As Im unable to find a 3990 or a 3995 I bought a 4975. It has 32 cores, 64 threads. It is about 70% as fast as a 3990. That is a real world comparison rendering in Corona. Boy, do I wish I'd got more 3990's when they were available.
  2. Hi, Any recommendations for stock sites selling good high resolution sky photography? I've been using the same ones for years and I feel I should branch out a bit. Dont mind paying, but hoping I can find either a good collection thats not been done to death or a good source for buying them cheaply on demand case by case. TIA, Tom.
  3. Crisis averted, needed to update install via the Autodesk Manager.
  4. Max has always given the option to launch into trial mode on render nodes as a license is not required. We just installed 3ds Max 2022.3 Node asks for license on launch. Not sure how to get it to launch properly, Max 2020 still works fine. Anyone else run into this problem?
  5. 3990 is 2500 dollars more than when I bought it 2.5 years ago. Crazy.
  6. Hi folks, I know, I should google it, I should research... I have not had my eye on tech for a while, last node I bought is 3990X based, it is very fast for rendering in Corona. Consdering building another but just thought I should see if its still the best option, Thanks in advance,
  7. Hello all, Im Looking for a photographer in or around Palm Beach, FL to shoot some 360's on a rooftop downtown. Anyone have a contact? Thanks, Tom
  8. Its great working a studio. Between my time at an architecture practice and a dedicated viz firm, there's no comparison. As long as the viz studio holds their ground regarding deadline and treats the staff well, you are in a good place. When you're a 3d guy at an architecture practice your service is often a bolt-on at the end of the design process. This means you are always under pressure and seldom allowed to take time to create.
  9. A few versions ago in max they improved the preview speed of high res bitmaps in the material editor. I think this has gone back to what it used to be, where the editor had to download/preview the fulkl res map of every slot and max hangs whilst it thinks about it. So a multi-mat materials like floorboards will hang for 5 minutes....Anyone else found this to be the case?
  10. easiest way would be to just use a different mapping channel. Simple planar map on a different ID then paint your B/W map in PS.
  11. If you have no additional render node, get the 3990 threadripper. Will pay for itself very quickly. MUCH more stable than the 2990, Ive owned both.
  12. I didnt know know that. Are you in Indiana? I find that pretty awful. I went to architecture school and one of the main things I come away with is an appreciation of how architecture impacts the every experience of the occupants/users of the built environment. It shapes lives, truly. I shudder to think of buildings not having a qualified eye cast over them before something is built that will endure for ~100yrs, be someones biggest life expense, need to be recycled, be repurposed, etc.
  13. Education is not so important in the rendering profession. An appreciation of the subject matter is of course an essential part of the package, but your portfolio outwieghs the formal credentials in getting gigs or getting hired. Your question blurs the line between the renderer and the architect. In practice the architect may render images, but the reverse is not often true. I'd also add that I think most people in the profession arrive by way of other fields. They may have been doing photography, game design, architecture, whatever. I'd imagine there are not many kids in school that say "I want to be an architectural renderer".
  14. I like the 'secretly blue color' sentiment, thats very true. My wife worked in ad agency world her whole career. We could afford (just) for her to remove herself from that when we had a child. I worked in an architecture practice (the in-house 3d guy). Both of us disliked our environment. She was looked over for being advanced in companies in favor of white male colleagues, was occasionally bullied by the same. I found being the in-house 3d guy at an architecture practice was bottom of the food chain for job satisfaction. Both of these items are also retirement related and apply to alot of people. Retirement is a strange thing. Its the goal that kind of keeps us from moving, but being in motion is the only way to develop. I dont mean by moving jobs, I just mean by keeping our horizons broad and our ambition stoked. I became an illegal resident of the US when I moved companies (my H1B status failed to be transferred to my new employer) which forced me to be self-employed. In retrospect it helped me greatly, I had to find clients. I guess right now in my career Im still striving for good work than waiting for it to be over. But it does loom somewhat. Especially when things are unstable. Handshakes and golf. Ha.
