  1. Hello there

Ive read some posts on this site about Sketchup to Max export and Ive seen examples of happy faces and sad faces. Im exporting using DWG and even though the sketchup scene does not have flipped faces they sometimes come out in Max WITH 40% flipped polygons.

Now my question is if you know why this is?

You said in a post you export the model as a drawing? How do you do that?

Im usually exporting pretty big chunks of geometry, could that be the problem?

    thanks for answer!

  2. I had the same problem before when I converted my old scene which was vray to mentalray render. What happened was the scene crashed and I continued working on the autoback.max recovered file. To solve this, I carefully started from scratch and saving as often so that I have a clean file to go back to after a crash. It renders fine after that. I think some data gets corrupted or not fully recovered after a crash. If you can redo your scene from scratch and start fresh, maybe this can solve your issues.
  3. thanks for the tips everyone. no time to redo the render as at the moment I have some work to finish. its been a while since i posted here.but will surely be back for more renders using mentalray.
  4. i didnt use photons. just purely FG. though the multiplier is already set to 2. thanks for the comments and observations everyone.
  5. here is the vray version. Modeled in 3dsmax 2009 and rendered using vray 1.5 sp2. little color correction in PS. @strat = yep, i agree, the shadow areas are a bit dark. I was trying to find out the linear workflow for mr. the vray version was done with the linear workflow. vray and mentalray are basically the same. obe has to know the pros and cons of both.
  6. here is the mentalray version of the previous bedroom i made in vray. photometric lights and FG only was used to illuminate the scene. played around with some filters in PS, experiment lang.let me know what u guys think. thanks
  7. if you right click your plant and choose vray properties, you can reduce the generate GI from 1 to .5 (for example). this will lower the GI contribution and lower the glowing look. or you can eyedropper the material of the plant and then lower the output of each bitmap.
  8. good start. improve more on your texture work and camera POV. most of your camera angles show a lot of distortion.
  9. Hi! it's been a very long time since i posted. modeled using 3dsmax 2008 and rendered with vray 1.5 sp1 plus PS. modeled from a scanned mag image. attached also is the reference photo.
  10. autoback is located in your "my documents\3ds Max\autoback", that is if you made a standard install. Im also working on a x64 system. so far no problems. Installation was clean. Could be that cuz you are using a demo so the usual external files were not included in the installation.
  11. I had the same issue before till i found the use of the "normal align tool". works very good if you want to align an object to another which is rotated to an angle.works in 3 - 4 simple mouse clicks too.
  12. try exporting the terrain using .dwg format.
  13. I had the same issues before. based on the image you attached, the paths are in your "my documents". Is the permissions on that folder allow full access? Why not try moving all resources to shared partitioned drive, for example drive d: (if available) then set all permissions to "allow full access". make sure also to allow read/write. Its also that you "my documents" folder is set to "private". then use resource collector in max to repath all your materials and resources to the new specified folder. here's how: 1. go to utilities panel 2. look for resource collector by clicking "more" button" 3. set the new output path to your new shared folder (make sure the paths are UNC) 4. then click "update" all your material paths will be updated to the new specified folder. im not sure about xref's, i think you have to repath them manually.maybe archive the scene file first. same also with photometric paths. XPpro allows a maximum of 10 simultaneous cpu's to access. but since you have 5 dualcore pc's, i think you're within the limit. I'm not sure though if xppro considers each core as 1 cpu or each physical cpus as 1 cpu. before i did an animation using xppro as my server. my render slaves are dual opteron dual cores. I can have 4 slaves connect.but once i add the 5th, i get the same error as u have.sometimes i can connect up to 6 slaves, but i think its because the rendertimes per each frame varies per computer, the slaves dont access all at the same time.so what i do is start first 4 and suspend 2 then start the 2 after a couple of frames at midrender..something like that. its better to setup a fileserver using a server OS like windows server. bit more expensive especially with CALs (Client Access Licenses) per client computer that you have to purchase if you have more than 5 computers. I am looking into Linux as a file server but havent got the time to research more on it. goodluck..hope this helps.
  14. we've been modeling in sketchup for most of our projects and we export them as drawing. once imported into max asa dwg file, missing faces or are no longer a problem. then we convert the model into a poly mesh. it is important though that the modeling in sketchup is done as clean and as organized as possible into groups to make the transition to 3dsmax easier.
