  1. Hi Andy Have a look at these. One is an intro to setting up DWG files to use in Max the other is a guide to copying objects but is shown over a dwg plan file so may be of some help on workflow. If you have any comments on the videos let me know, it would be good to get some feedback and I may start doing some more
  2. It may well be one of your glossy/shiny materials, most likely glass. Try turning off the bottles, or anything else which is glass. The same problem has occurred rendering out scenes with cars in. All fine at low res and then the final high res over night render returns over bright dots and splotches. Turns out it was the windshields.
  3. Hi Nick Check this link http://www.spot3d.com/vray/help/150SP1/tutorials_glassinterface.htm Skip the caustics bit if you don't need it as it'll jack up your render times
  4. Thinking about it. A simpler way would be to delete the area of your detailed mesh from the big terrain, attach as an edit poly. Then take a brand new plane, divide it up to be of medium density and conform it over the whole lot. So you would end up with one nice clean mesh object conforming to both terrains.
  5. Hi Jens Not so sure regarding your viewport performance but terrain being displayed may be clogging it up. Regarding the terrain. It looks like you have a dense mesh which you are trying to join to a less dense mesh ( the bigger terrain). I would avoid using booleans wherever possible and attach the two objects using edit poly attach. The problem you will have is if the meshes are different it will be hard work to weld the vertices and make it tidy. So you may see a join line when you render. However this probably wont be noticeable. Do you actually have to merge the two terrains together into one object? Set up you the views you want to render now and then you will see how much of an impact any problems will actually have. You could take your new dense mesh - Edit poly - Select outer edges - Extrude outer edges to extent of you big terrain - Delete the section which covers the detailed mesh - Conform to big terrain - attach and weld back to detailed mesh in edit poly. Of course this will mean you have a higher poly count.
  6. Hi Rafael The most successful way would be to unwrap the object in 3ds Max using the UVW unwrapper and then paint the texture in Photoshop, not forgetting to do reflectance and glossy maps as well as bump. You could then use greyscale versions of your painted texture as a mask on a blend material to merge between clean and dirty textures.
  7. I would say it depends on which sector you are attempting to move into. If you are looking to work in-house at an Architects, Sketchup is great as it integrates through to Max so well. Although more and more there is a move towards BIM software such as Revit, as Dimitrios pointed out. The problem with using 3ds Max to model everything whilst working at an Architects or Engineers is the bottleneck created around you as the only skillset available. If the practice uses BIM or Sketchup, then anyone can alter the model and pass it on to you for the fun stuff in Max. If you are looking towards a visualisation firm then it would be a focus on 3ds Max for modelling and rendering. If you are going solo, then it's whatever looks good in the end regardless of how you got there.
  8. Hi Calum / Thura I developed my dissertation around architecture and film which can draw many parallels with visualisation, which is now my field. You may find more research opportunities regarding the development of narratives and story telling within architecture and how this is represented through visual media. The Bartlett has run a film unit within the architecture department for a few years. Start looking at Nigel Coates as well as Architecture and Film I and II by Maggie Toy. Camera Lucida is also a great book by Roland Barthes, not strictly architectural but beautifully written and delves into the philosophy of the image and photography. I taught a studio skills unit last year at BIAD and touched upon psychology in image making on a practical level, I could send you some headlines if you are interested. I think for your dissertation, simply trying to write about psychology and visualisation is too broad a topic. I would try to drill down into one single aspect or offshoot. Off top of the head thoughts: - Sexing it up - The portrayal of architecture through visual media for public consumption. i.e. Press and planning - Influence of the method and techniques used to visualise on the actual design of buildings. Could be a comparative study of built objects and how they have been represented since their inception - Telling stories - Direct parallels between visual methods of story telling and the design of architecture. Could be comparing techniques such as composition, rhythm, colour, light and shade. What is deemed to be beautiful in architecture and in visual media and compare and contrast to reach a conclusion which says something about the way humans perceive beauty. Drop me a message if you want.
  9. Hi Isabel Just make sure DR is on in each file you need to render and then send them to backburner on one machine. That host machine will handle the render queue through backburner and then distribute it to you render farm through Vray. Hope this helps
  10. Hi Ben There looks to be somehting wrong with scale of objects in the scene to me. The chair looks small and the bookcase timber and ladder look very thick in comparison. It's not clear what the bars running across the space are for, is there meant to be glazing in there?
  11. Hi urgently need to find some sporty entourage Tennis kit is preferable, I've been to Dosch but the online payment isn't working at the moment any help would be much appreciated thanks
  12. go to vray render settings and turn off displacement in global switches.
  13. My 2 pence +VAT Just simply agreed scope of service with a price attached for whatever it is you are going to be doing. Whether its to work for 40 hours up to an agreed date on design development or to produce a visual. Include something which gives a time frame to allow for changes if you are doing the latter and state that extra time will be charged at a specified rate but you should inform the client if this is likely to happen. 30 Days from invoice seems to be the norm and I would say the idea of a deposit comes across as a little abrupt. If you explain that you are a sole trader and that to keep cash flow on track you need money coming in. I'm sure that an incremental payment after seven days would not be unreasonble. Best thing to do is just discuss it and be open, do the agreed work and expect to get paid for it. Just be honest friendly and professional, and remember that visualisers are usually not high on their priorities when they have to deal with projects going awry and getting paid themselves. Sad reality is that the industry is full of many scurrilous people who will try to back out of payments when they can. I've seen Architecture firms go under simply because they didn't get paid, despite having reams of appointment documents and contracts in place. Some good advice is not to rely on one client to sustain your cashflow, I heard it somewhere that no one client should make up more that 15% of your turnover. Architects and developers are used to prdoucing appointment documents themselves and should not flinch at the idea of signing an agreement, if they do, then avoid them.
  14. Hi buddy,

I work am the media director for Sovibrant. http://www.sovibrant.co.uk. We are one of the main companies up here doing Visualisation at the moment as there arent many outside the main architects you mentioned such as Aedas. Drop me an email with some info and samples and I will keep an eye out up here for you it you want. We are always willing to help other artists!!

Also I can keep the stuff on record if I get a chance to expand my team which is a big possibility sometime soon.

    Cheers and take care

PS My email is : mo.akhtar@sovibrant.co.uk

  15. Hi all Does anyone know what the deal is with substance materials. Is there or should there be an editor available in Max 2012, we're on subscription, if that makes any difference. Thanks
