  1. What modelling techniques do you guys use in c4d? Spline outlines and lofts and booles or poly modelling with loop cuts and bridging? Also how do you accurately enter line lengths when spline drawing like you would in sketchup or any cad program? I model everything in sketchup these days and import but previously its been archicad and formZ, but always importing and rendering. I would love to model from scratch in c4d though. Its just I would miss the simple tools like push/pull from sketchup which I dont think C4D has. Extrude leaves faces that you dont want and are a pain to clear up.
  2. Yeah I wish there was a better solution. I suppose it depends on who needs the fastest access. installing an ssd on your machine for textures gives you fast access and others can access the same drive over the network at the same speed as the NAS so no difference for them but it should help your machine! I have an ssd on mine where I had visions of transfereing all my textures to in a nice orderly fashion but I've discovered a tangled web of legacy projects and materials that's just a complete mess!
  3. Just wondering, do you guys keep all your texture paths / locations on your Nas drives? I tried that when I got first got my DS412+ over my gb network but found it to be a bit slow. So I just run everything directly from my workstation and have my nodes map the drives from my workstation. My Nas just backs up my workstation now.
  4. I really like the idea of the laubwerk plugin, but as Juraj said the quality of the trees isn't the highest out there. Perhaps they have one eye on the poly count so people with lower spec systems don't run into trouble.
  5. I find plant factory the best I've tried. Sure it's eon and a bit slow and buggy in places but in terms of quality of the final model you can get out of it, it's very tough to beat. I have worked out the basics and bought a few extra plants and im pretty satisfied with the results and control over variations. Worth a look anyway but you need to be prepared to put a bit of time in.
  6. I own a 12WX and never really got on well with it for a few reasons, low resolution/jitters near the edge/colour accuracy. So I use an intuos 5 now and find that much easier once you learn how to disconnect hand and eye. These 24inch models do look awesome and they have fixed all the problems I have had with the 12wx. I was really tempted to get one but the more i think about it the more i realise i still use my mouse an awful lot in photoshop and I can do everything I need with my intuos. The only reason I would get one is if I were to do a lot of hand drawing but generally I use it more for dodge and burn type effects where accuracy isn't always necessary.
  7. This is sweet and im sure very satisfying. Looks great in-situ. I was thinking about doing this sort of thing just the other week as I was going round Ikea so its great to see what's possible. My farm is a real miss match and ugly and messy. One thing that might stop me doing this build though is the restriction to 16GB of RAM rather than 32GB to futureproof a bit more. Im leaning towards just getting a few shuttles and stacking them which isnt as cool or neat or im sure as quiet but at least I know they should last me a while. But if your not pushing 16GB then there would be no point. Cheers
  8. That being said Im hopefully recieving my new laptop next week with a 95% NTSC Gamma matte screen. That might be sweet enough for presentations. But doesn't have the pass it around tactile hold it in your hands feel, which is a bonus for the ipad.
  9. Cheers Jeff. I had a go at boosting the screen brigtness manually on my iphone4 and it actually made quite a bit of difference and brought more light into the shadows hence reducing the harsh contrast. I guess the auto setting it probably there to keep a strong contrast whatever the lighting as a strong contrast is good for keeping black text black on a white page. I My images look OK to be honest after this tweak so might actually be worth a punt when I have some spare cash. I might have finally found the excuse I needed to get an ipad! Although I really really hate how petty apple are about flash support, its playground stuff! Also adding attachments in emails, printing, no native USB etc - basic lack of analysing how we use things - not what the adverts would have us believe! I wonder how android is coming along, last time I checked it had a few tablet issues itself.
  10. Interesting. I've uploaded some of my images to my iphone4 and my comments would be that the contrast is quite harsh. A lot of the detail in the shadows gets crushed and the images are generally a tad dark - but that might be an autobrightness feature that can be overridden. Do you get any brightness/image control on the ipad? I think my printed portfolio does my images a bit more justice but the option to zoom and insert movies and just turning up with an ipad is very appealing for a slick client presentation. Although glare might be a bit annoying off the grass screen - something you dont get on a nice matt print.
  11. Thanks Japi, this really is a great tool, love it. Would be great if you could also plug it into after effects. Also curves as mentioned before would be a nice addition. What would be really useful would be a decent glare and bloom function with appeture and obsticle maps like Fry and Maxwell.... Cheers Rob
  12. I think this is what you must have downloaded already! Its the name of the software from the first post with the link at the bottom.......
  13. Yeah great article. I like the structure and the reasoning, it seems like good straight forward advice and I can imagine it is exactly what an employer is looking for. Thanks
  14. Thanks for this Japi. I really like the concept and its kind of like a one click solution for altering your tonemapping. For me this has good points and less good points... Firstly it would be nice if it worked with 16bit tiffs which is what i tend to work with as converting down to an 8bit jpeg or png is a bit worrying for editing purposes, especially if it needs more tweaking in PS. Im only on CS2 at work which doesnt seem to like .exr so maybe in CS4 this is less of an issue. The workflow is also slightly odd for me as I would choose to do all my editing and balancing in PS first and then when i put it through the realcamera software it all changes again so what im seing in PS is not really how its going to finish up. But its another useful artistic tool, there is a good range of films (almost too many) that have a nice effect and it's quite straight forward to use. It would be nice to have a reset button for the gamma functions so when we make a new preset (once we've filled all the slots) we dont have to manually reset each slider. I must say that because they are mimicing film types then a lot of them seem to look more oldfashinoned as we are more used to neutral digital images these days! But useful for adding a bit of attitude into the image and can make it stand out. I think Fryrender is getting a similar function in its next SP release but I do like the idea of changing the whole image after people have been added etc I guess its just going to take a bit of getting used to and perhaps raining in the PS tonemapping and leaving it to realcamera. Thanks again, I think i will definately throw a few renders in there after Ive finshed all my PS work and see what comes out! Rob
  15. im afraid i'd have to agree with mohinder, although I can't quite remember the original Spine3D one. To me it does look quite generic - not saying it's not nice but rather, id not be at all surprised if it was a template site. The new Spine one is much better and original.
