  1. I tried to create 3D chinese Signage using the Text tool spline + Extrude. I have tried many ways, but I cant find a way to type chinese text in 3ds max. I am using 3ds max 2011.. windows 7 english version. I have no problem viewing chinese text in my computer and I have checked, I do have chinese fonts in my windows control panel. When I copy chinese text (from google translate) and paste into the spline Text box.. It just appear "???????" in the viewport. and I have make sure the font I selected is suppose to be for chinese. Anyone can help? I cant be drawing chinese texts for hundred of shop signages I need to create.. Appreciate any help~thanks!!
  2. Hi Jeff, May i know is this product recommended? http://www.techradar.com/reviews/pc-mac/peripherals/input-devices/general-input-devices/x-rite-colormunki-display-1057606/review I notice there is another more advance product by colormunki (colormunki photo). But the cost is way too high for me. Is it ok if I just get the one as above? Thanks!
  3. Hi Jeff, Thank you so much for answering my questions personally! I have always tried to study color management since a few years ago, but without the right tools...I just couldnt do it right. After reading through your explanation, I think I have to decide to stick with the sRGB workspace. It should be a safer choice... since I will be working from 3ds max and editing in Photoshop. Perhaps my need for a wide colorspace (adobeRGB) is not as crucial compare to those working in graphics-printing-advertising line. Look like I have no choice but to invest on a ColorMunki device, and set my colorspace preset to sRGB and calibrate + profile my display. I know many people will disagree to use sRGB colorspace on a widegamut monitor like U2711... as it will be a waste of the monitor potential. It limits the color that can display on the monitor. But I rather do that than having all my image messed up in the end, and what the clients see end of the day is more important. I may have a lot more questions to ask in the future. Thank you and sorry if my English is a bit ... confusing and the terminology I used is incorrect.
  4. I have finally bought an IPS monitor, Dell u2711. I came from using the 17" FHD lcd screen on my laptop Dell Precision M6600. Before this I have never really put any serious effort into making sure my monitor color is accurate. With the latest purchase, I figure it is time to get into a more "professional" workflow in getting the best accurate color from my monitor. But where do I start? I know the U2711 comes Pre-calibrated in factory (sRGB & Adobe RGB). So the first thing I do after I plug in the monitor (through Display Port) is to set the Preset to "Adobe RGB". Next, I went to Start> color management> assign Adobe RGB (1998) as default profile. Is that how it should work? And it should have a fairly accurate color by now? I do not own any calibration hardware, so I will follow the adobe RGB profile for the meantime, which I believe should be as accurate as it can be. Correct me if im wrong. So what I am doing now is just "profiling" instead of "calibrating"? If I assume the above is the correct method, next I will need to set my software (3ds max and photoshop cs4) to work in Adobe RGB color space? I went into photoshop's Color Setting. Change the working space from sRGB to Adobe RGB and press OK. Done? Now whenever I open an image without color profile to it, photoshop will as me if I will like to assign the Adobe RGB color to the file, and I should. I use to work everything in sRGB color space because I do not know the proper way in using other color profiling and has no calibration tool, and using sRGB ensure that my client may see the closest thing to what I see from my side. I usually save and send the file in JPEG. So I do not know if I have adobe rgb profile embedded in the image. When my client opens the file from his computer (assuming using Windows photo viewer) will he see weird color... or accurate color base on my adobe RGB profile? I am in a dilemma here, as I am still post processing my 3d with my laptop screen, because the color difference between my laptop and new monitor is too much. And for 1-2 years i have been producing images from laptop and that is what my clients see (and usually have no complain about the color) My real question is..In my case, should I apply the Adobe RGB workflow. or should stick with the sRGB standard workflow? What is the consequences to move completely to Adobe RGB? BTW, in 3ds max, how is the monitor profiling going to affect what we see in 3ds max rendering? There seems to be no option to assign color profile to Max. Please advice me! Thanks a million!
  5. Ah found it..! not the most convenient way .. but it should work for now... I have to write them down one by one.. Just hope there are magic that can list down all of them with a click
  6. Thanks for your reply. I have tried to use that.. but I have about 100 segments in the object which I need to measure. Right now I am trying to look for a way to explode the 100 segment to individual objects so i can measure each of them. Is there such an option? Exploding each segments... otherwise I will have to use the detach option and do it one by one....
  7. I am helping an architect to do some 3d modeling and he needs me to find out the length of each pipes (which I did with Spline) I try to google for the solution but I could not get the exact answer. Maybe because I have never use Maxscript. I see some people say using "getSegLengths" but I have no idea how to access this and is it under the Maxscript which I have to type in some code for it? I try to google for "getSegLength" tutorial. None comes out as well.. So I have no choice but to seek advice and help from here... Can anyone please give me a simple guide for this? My goal is not to learn maxscript at this point, but to get the length of the segments I need. So any method will do. Thanks in advance
  8. OHh!! Thanks a million! I should have found out this long ago... rather than rerender most of the views... this is great!
  9. Is there a way I can set Vray to render from Top to bottom (left to right and slowly going down), instead of the standard vray rendering from 10 O' Clock ... and rotating 360 degress anti clock wise? I have tried to check for such setting but no such luck.. The reason I will like to do that is because sometime I need to stop my rendering halfway, and resume the rendering from where it stops (mayb first top.. then later bottom.. and i can combine the rendering later on in photoshop). The current rotating rendering sequence doesnt allow me to region render part by part.. as it always render at an angle. So most area have to Re- render again. Sorry if it is difficult to get my explanation Anyone getting this? Thanks
  10. This is the first time I received such request. It is the printshop who request that size from the client ( & the client request from me!!) Im surprise the printshop doesnt know how to manipulate the image size...and they are requesting for the exact size the printer need. Anyway, your information is very helpful and 200% make sense!! Thanks! So I guess I will just render 7000pixels & enlarge it to 25k pixel. The printshop should not complain about this anymore!
  11. Thanks a million for your excellent advice. I tried the software you recommended and it really work amazingly. It may not be as detail as those "rendered" at full size, but who actually need such detail when printed this large!! At least it doesnt look like it has been blown up in size & zagged! Correct me if I am wrong, usually there is no need to render at such a big size even for commercial projects for banner/advertisement etc? Anyone did that before? 25k Pixels rendered. Or almost all will be using this technique as well? Thanks again!!
  12. For the past 4 years I have been rendering at 1400pixel width slowly to 2500 pixel width... and lately I have been rendering at 3000pixel width (as Monitor size getting larger and machine getting faster) Today I was informed by my client that they need 25200 pixels X 19800 pixels, 168”W x 132”H at 300 pixel/inch for their printing!!! Not just one 3D but Six! IM IN SHOCK! I have never rendered anything this huge before. Previously I rendered something for a 2 storeys tall banner. but that is only at 3000pixel! Anyway since they have requested for this, I will have to let them know if I can come out with this. I have already done the modeling, lighting, rendered the 3000pixels for all the views before. Now they just need it MUCH BIGGER. But is it possible to render at this size? Just to give an idea of my current machine & rendering time: Dell Precision M6600 Windows 7 Professional 64bit 8Gb Ram i7-2720QM. 2.2Ghz Nvidia Quadro 3000M 3ds max 2011 + Vray By using the above machine I render a 3000pixel width image in average 2 hours. Using Irradiance Map set to High, with Light Cache at default, Image Sampler adaptive dmc at default. Noise Treshold 0.005. I cannot imagine how long it needs to render something 8x times larger than this. Can someone share some tips on maybe there is some setting I can adjust when rendering XL size to increase the rendering speed? I am thinking, if the client willing to pay high enough for the large rendering, I will be getting a much more powerful desktop to do the job. Mayb quad xeon? What is the most powerful setup option do I have? Please advice me what should I do? I need to get back to them if I can do this. Thanks!
  13. Ok I moving from 3ds max 2009 to 3ds max 2011x64. I am working on a bungalow... and when I extrude faces of a wall or any editable poly objeccts... it will always starts from 1000mm++ . It happens for Bevel, Inset and any other tools. This is very irritating as most of the time i just need to extrude 20mm-100mm... And everytime I start using these tools... the whole model will be in a mess.. (imagine you want to extrude a few polygon on an apple... and it start extrude at 1000mm++... I will need to type in number manually, exp: 10mm) If I drag the arrow, which i usually did, It will move from 1000mm to 2000mm, 5000mm and down to -1000mm, -2000mm. I am sorry I dont know how to explain it properly.. therefore also not too sure how to search for solution. I believe it has to do with scale? Currently using: Display unit setup: Metric = Milimeters System Unit Setup: 1unit-1.0, Meters. My file has already worked halfway... and if I change the unit in System unit setup now. . it will mess up the whole file scale... Please help! I can continue working on it. but it is really time consuming and annoying. I cant work properly like usal Thanks a million!
  14. Ok I tried out something which I hope is the solution: Previously my setting under UNIT SETUP is : System Unit Display = Milimeters , Display Unit Scale = Milimeters, Now i change it to: System unit Display = METERS, Display Unit Scale = Milimeters. It solves the problem.. But I still do not know what exactly it is doing and why it works this way... I just dont want my scale to messed up in the end.
