  1. I am experiencing the same issue of files unable to load (and unable to merge), except that it happens like once or twice a week. Is anyone else having these issues with 2010? I have been able to use my autobacks and .bak files mostly but it happens on older files too, which makes it scary to even try to open an older file. It doesn't seem to happen when working locally though, so I didn't know if it would have anything to do with our network. Also I am on 32 bit 2010, but we have others working with 64 bit 2010 - could that be an issue too? Anyone have any thoughts?
  2. Thanks Derek. We must have missed that hotfix - I'll give it a shot.
  3. I've been having occasional problems with the spline outline function when outlining a spline with an arc/curve in it. The arc/curve vertices do not offset the specified distance, instead they seem to stick to the original vertices and I have to manually move the newly created vertices. Has anyone else ever come across a problem like this? It doesn't happen all the time either-it happens sporadically. I'm using Max 2008 with the services packs. Thanks.
  4. Not sure if this is a standard autocad thing or a custom thing here at the office, but check in the folder that the drawings are in for a folder called docinfo, inside that folder should be a file called DwgHistories.txt. This file shows every time a drawing has been saved and who and when it was saved.
  5. I think that I solved it - kind of. I merged everything into a new file and the RPC's render fine, each and every time. Something must has gotten corrupted in the master file and was carried into the rest when we did a save as.
  6. Is or has anyone else experienced problems with RPC's and MR when rendering night scenes? I'm using Max 9 with MR daylight system, with MR Physical Sky and everytime we render a night scene the RPC's either render red or lose thir maps - but if we render the same scene as a day scene they render fine. The other very wierd thing is that the first time you render the night scene in the file the RPC's work fine - but every time after they screw up, until you close Max and reopen. Any thoughts? Other then not using RPC's - which would be so nice - but unfortunately a necessary evil for the time being.
  7. you could also project the texture onto the curved surface instead of mapping it onto the surface.
  8. i think we had a problem like this in our office a while back with final render materials, and i seem to remember that if you set your material editor renderer to be the same renderer that your production engine is it fixed the problem. to change it open the render dialog box and scroll down to the bottom of the common tab and open the assign renderer box, then click on the three dots next to the material editor. hope this works for you.
  9. Does anyone know if or where it is possible to set the default for the line creation drag type to be corner rather than bezier? I know where to change it once max opens, but is there a way to set it so it defaults to one or the other? Thanks, Randy
  10. I've actually started doing this lately in our studio, because we have a lot of mac users, and I refuse to give up modeling in max/viz. As Brain said when you import the model just change the soften edges slider until the triangulation disappears - checking the soften coplaner box helps sometimes too. Other things to consider are not using instances, because they just don't show up once imported, and don't change the pivot point or your object won't be in the correct location once imported. Other then those things I've had good success with importing files to Sketchup.
  11. there is also a measure command that can be accessed through the utilities tab (it can be set as a floater too). randy
  12. hey brian, we just started using photometric lights with finalrender where i work and really the only problems we have encountered is if you have the standard raytrace shadows set instead of fR raytrace shadows - then we have experienced crashes. other then that i love the photometric lights, and you can still cheat with them a little if you need to, by adjusting the multiplier, changing candelas or even using the exposure control. randy
  13. the bff script is the only way i know of (at least i think it still works). check out scriptspot.com. randy
  14. how about exporting as a .dwg from max and importing it into sketchup?
  15. first computers: vic 20 followed by the commador 64 (still love the games) first serious machine: 75mhz, 8 meg hard drive i think, and 16 meg ram that gateway decided to use 4 - 4 meg chips which made upgrading very expensive.
