  1. I don't apply aggressive OC so it shouldn't be throttling. Not to mention that I'm far from reaching critical temperatures so it shouldn't be doing that. I also do the overclock as soon as Windows boots so OC is certainly applied before testing. I can also see this in the graphs of MSI Afterburner. I don't see the GPU clock speed and GPU load going down while running the benchmarks. I've also got access to another computer that has exactly the same model card from Gigabyte and the results are the same - overclocking didn't improve Octane's or Vray RTs speed but it did improve score in Arion Benchmark and LuxMark. Another strange thing is that my old GTX 460 that I replaced with Gigabyte's GTX 980 shows about 20% higher score in Octane bench and Vray RT if I overclock it. So there certainly is something strange happening here with GTX 980 but I can't say what until someone else tests with a GTX 980.
  2. I don't think it is but how do I check this so I'm sure? I watch the GPU clock in real time with GPU-Z during load and I didn't notice the clock speed and core voltage going down. What should I watch to see if it's throttling?
  3. I have a strange problem with a new graphics card that I just bought - Gigabte GTX 980 N980WF3OC-4GD. If I overclock the GPU, I see no improvements in rendering speed with Vray RT and Octane Benchmark. Why is that? My old card - GTX 460 renders faster when I overclock it but not the GTX 980. Is my GTX 980 defective? Can anyone test on Vray RT and Octane Bench and confirm?
  4. I just received information from a large retailer that they are going to stock up with lots of new X79 boards next week. If X79-Deluxe is in their inventory I might grab that one. I know that there is no great difference between this and the vanilla X79 model but the additional features and better build quality justify the higher price in my opinion. Sabertooth looks good indeed but I really don't like the fans it comes with. I prefer a silent operation.
  5. Thanks for chiming in, guys. Then maybe I should go with the Deluxe? The problem is that there are no X79-Deluxe boards on our market currently and no one knows when deliveries are expected (I've called numerous large retailers). I've been waiting for a month now and still no X79-Deluxe boards in stock here. Is it worth waiting for another week or two or should I just buy another MB?
  6. I'm looking into motherboards for my new i7 4930k CPU and I've shortlisted these 2 motherboards. What do you think will be better quality? I'll be overclocking the CPU to at least 4.2-4.3 Ghz so stability is of a great importance. On one hand the WS model is marketed as workstation grade so I presume it's better suited for high workloads. So I presume it's built tougher? On the other hand the Deluxe is a newer motherboard and supports Ivy Bridge-E processors (i7 4930k) out of the box (without BIOS flash unlike WS). Does that mean that the Deluxe handles i7 4930k more stable? I've also noticed quite a lot negative reviews on Newegg for the WS model compared to Deluxe: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131971 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813132047 Is it right to think that there's something wrong with this model or is it just a plain chance that so many people have been giving negative reviews? Also, what are your views on the gaming oriented motherboards (rampage IV Formula/Extreme). Do these boards provide more features/ build quality / sturdiness for 3D work over the WS and Deluxe? I'd really want to hear your thoughts. Thanks!
  7. I think you might have a point here, guys. Maybe it's better to wait and see what the beta version has to offer before choosing the card. It will be interesting if there's an improvement in opencl performance. The new high end AMD cards certainly pack some serious horse power and it would be great to see it utilized properly!
  8. Thanks for the broad explanation. So looks like I've got to go with NVIDIA again. Unless someone comes up with a good argument why I shouldn't. Thanks again!
  9. Hi Guys, I'm in a pretty big dilemma here and would be really grateful if you can help me out. Which of these two video cards - GTX 770 and R9 290 - would you recommend for the following usage: 3ds max, Vray(production+RT), After effects, Photoshop, Autocad, Rhino 3D? I'm mostly seeing people prefering Geforce. Is there a particular reason for this? I heard that NVIDIA intentionally cripples OpenGL performance on their gaming cards and they have a very bad time dealing with OpenGL software (Rhino 3D, Blender etc..). Is this still the case with the 7 series as it was with the last few generations? I currently have a GTX 460 which is really terrible at OpenGL apps (Rhino 3D, Blender etc.) What about AMD? From what I'm reading the R9 290 is a beast of a card (at least for gaming). Does this translate to 3D software too and does AMD also cripple their OpenGL performance as NVIDIA does? Thanks in advance!
  10. Hi all, I've got a question that has bugged me for quite some time and I would like to know if you guys experience the same problems that I do. What I want to know is why is it almost impossible to properly color correct/adjust textures while in Gamma 2.2 mode? Please take a look at the attached image below my post. You'll find different scenarios and how different it is adjusting textures in Gamma 1.0 and Gamma 2.2 mode. As you can see, In Gamma 2.2 mode even the slightest correction in contrast/brightness levels "burns out" the texture. Whereas in Gamma 1.0 the texture preserves its natural look and the color corrections behave as expected without destroying the color information. Whatever I do I cannot get natural looking textures when using Color Correct in Max. The textures always start looking like cr@p when I use CC and Gamma 2.2 color space. The same problem happens if I make brightness/contrast adjustments through the "Bitmap parameters" slot of the texture. The only way I can get the textures look good is when I make the color corrections outside of Max and then load it back in Max without using Color Correction map. This however wastes a lot of time and makes the Color Correction map obsolete. This makes no sense at all. Any ideas on this matter? I' believe that this has something to do with the math Max does under the hood when you adjust it to be in Gamma 2.2 space. Maybe the math operations get "skewed" and become erroneous when you tell Max to use Gamma 2.2. In a way, 1+1 no longer equals 2 but 3 instead. Do you get what I mean? Any insights on this is highly appreciated.
  11. I'm curious whether the Clipping planes are fixed in Max 2014. In Max 2013 they are broken. Just try to enable Clipping planes in Front view for example, change the same view to Left and then change it back to Front again. The clipping planes get reset (going all the way up and down the slider).
  12. Thanks for the comments. It turned out that it's one of the proxies that caused the problem. I proxified the object again and everything renders fine.
  13. Hi, I have a strange problem with a scene where I have about 220 proxy trees and bushes. When I render with the proxies, max suddenly crashes. Usually at the light cache pass. Does anybody know what's the cause of this? I tried using a grey override material but still no luck. Any ideas?
  14. Hi, I have a very strange problem with Max 2012 and 2009 on 2 PCs. I have noticed that frequently when I open a file made with Vray the file won't open (Max just freezes) and then when I close it the window goes away but the process remains in Task Manager and I can't kill it even with "End Task". It disappears from the list by itself after 2-3 mins. and the next time I open Max it gives an error which looks something like this: C++ Runtime Error! R6025 -pure virtual function call wscommcntr3.exe Also, sometimes when I close max It just won't let me. I have to kill it in Task Manager. This happens if I've opened a file made with Vray. It's strange but this happens with both Max 2012 and 2009 on 2 PCs. Can you please help me solve this issue? Thanks in advance!
  15. Hi, I have a question regarding rendering with Rebus farm and 3ds Max. Besides the output format I choose (png), it also produces .exr files. Why is that? Does that mean that it renders my images twice and consumes my render points/credit faster? Here are my render settings before submitting the job. You can see that I've only chosen PNG as the output format for my image. I can't see where these exr files are coming from: Thanks for your help
