  1. Got to the bottom of it, and was easier than suspected. The problem being in the new 3dmax a dialogue box came up to start and when you hit new scene it doesnt use maxstart, but if you use 'reset' it does. What I didnt appreciate is that if you just close the start up box, the maxstart is alerady open in the background. Thanks for your help guys.
  2. Hi, The company I work for have recently invested in buying Max and vray for the office but it means we now have the latest software, both Max 2015 and Vray 3.0 both of which are versions i'm not used to and I seem to falling at the first hurdle in trying to get them set up. I have the project folder set correctly and I set up my render settings how I want them as default, do a save as and save it into 'scenes' as maxstart but no matter what I do, when i create a new scene, all my render settings are back to their defaults. Any suggestions?
  3. Has anyone came across this as its a small thing but driving me up the wall. Its only started recently and cant seem to solve it, but basically when the icon is over certain parts of the screen it just flickers like mad. The most noticeable is when say, your going over a box in order to input a figure or if your moving over buttons is another. Ive tried using the different drivers but none make a difference and thought I would update gfx drivers but i have the most up to date.
  4. So I've got a job coming up which should be quite challenging and on the back of that its spurred me into looking at my workflow and ways to improve it. Two plugins im interested in and seem great working with the lite versions is forestpack and railclone but thats for another thread. Another one is Batzal roof designer as its quite clear that I could make quite an improvement if i was to model my roofs as opposed to flat textures which is what i tend to use at the moment. I've downloaded it and had a play about but seem to be getting stuck on what i assume should be very simple issues. The first is i cant seem to find a way to put horizontal gaps between my slates. I only need a few mm's, but a gap none the less. The next one is texturing. I thought this would work a treat and i envisaged that you could set random material id's which would then allow me to use the multitexture material to apply say 10 different slate textures and then allow for small variances. When i go through the motions it only seems to use 2 id's and even then it has them in some awful pattern as opposed to random and i have set it to have 10 id's but it doesnt seem to make a difference. Thanks
  5. Youre a gentleman, thanks for the help, its appreciated.
  6. Thanks very muchf or the help, you onviously know a lot more on the subject than i do. The one thing I dont quite understand mind you is that if the 7970 and say the 680 are fairly comparable being top of the range for the gaming cards, the 7970 is only £300 http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-144-MS Whereas for the 68, youre looking more at close to £500 http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-030-KF I'm kinda torn in terms of what to choose but i'll scour the net and see if I can find someone who maybe has experience with both. Thanks again.
  7. Cheers, and yeah not interested in RT though I do have it. I just use the normal vray side of things. Another one I've had my eye on is the HD7970, though again not entirely sure what to looks for. Is there something I should be looking for in the spec which tells me how good they will perform in the viewport?
  8. Hi guys, Recently bought a new computer and after various issues i'm now getting a refund but it gives me some more time to do some research before buying again. The main issue is the graphics card. I'm a vray user but I dont use RT, so for me the graphics card is onl;y really associated with the viewport speed. I've got s decent budget for it, say up to £600 but at the same time I dont want to spend more moneu for the sheer hell of it and get very little for the extra pounds spent. So with that in mind whats the best performing gfx card to use in this situation. The previous computer i sent back had a gtx680 though whether that was the correct choice or not i'm not sure. Thanks a lot.
  9. I've got a scene i'm working on with a suspended ceiling, which is simple enough, nothing too taxing in the scene. I want some spotlights and I could swear i've done the same before. I use a free spotlight, and make sure shadows is on with vray selected. Now despite there being only 4 spotlights, the whole scene seems to crash when it comes to 'preparing global light manager' In the end despite it being a low quality, low resolution progress shot, eventually after about 5-10mins it renders but doesn't respond for ages. Is there something simple i'm missing because as mentioned i've used the same before with no problems. I even rendered it on my old computer to see if it was something to do with the new rig but the exact same happened. Thanks

    Render Farm Query

Apologies as i'm not that clued up on some of the terminology, but when you say a server, does that mean a computer running something different to Win7, I remember the server where I used to work but that had some different form of windows on it. Or does it simply mean the two computers are talking to one another? Also, when you say the server is its own machine, so what, you'd take the current computer, have that as a server off to the side, and use the new one primarilly for working? The above answers may explain this anyway, but If i understand you correctly, you have the two computers wired up and they can both see the drives on each other, for the likes of max you would just have the external file paths all pointing to the same location on one of the computers. So youre working away on the primary computer, get the scene just the way you want, so then you open the file on the secondary computer and simply hit render. That right? Thanks for the help.

    Render Farm Query

To date, when rendering I tend to do most things on my one and only computer, but when I'm busy i'll use the likes of rebus. For some time now I've been pondering whether things are fine as they are or I bite the bullet and get a second computer and basically render everything myself, but i'm not entirely sure how its done. So for all the guys who have more than one computer, when youre doing your final renders, do you need to actually archive the file, move it over to your other computer and start the render, doing that for every render? My assumption is that isnt the case as it seems like it would be quite time consuming, especially if say you notice an error and have to do it all again, but at the same time i'm not overly sure how you would do it. I suppose one of the main issues would be your texture library, would you need to copy it on to both computers seperately? Any help would be great as I could do with getting my head round it and if I go with it, get a new computer.
  13. Yeah i already knew vray and max but the company thought it would be a good idea to basically increase the quality, the company i'm on about isnt the one in my sig though, thats my freelance business. We only done the interior, but if im totally honest i didnt learn anything. The guys poor grasp of english meant we got nowhere when asking about some issues we were having. But I would recomend you deffinately get more than just my opinion, because like most things out there, you'll get folk with bad and good experiences, it just depends what the majority are i suppose. We didnt have a good experience at all, but maybe others were different. I havent done it myself but ive heard good things about evermotions training, you may want to cast your eye over that.
  14. I thought I did explain what I found wrong with it. what exactly are you after?
