  1. I got this large and lazy model I imported from Revit (which I don't use, btw). It keeps freezing and crashing but somehow I managed to add textures and lanscaping to it. But now when I try to render it it just keeps crashing and giving me warnings like this for various objects. Does anyone know what might be causing this. I would really appreciate any help. I did erase some interior objects to try and make scene liter, but that can't be it, right?
  2. Strange, it seems to have something to do with this auto gamma solution in Max2014, which I really dislike btw. Basically, I was trying to keep gamma and lut settings from a previous file (you know, "Keep the system's Gamma and LUT" option). It was set to 2.2/1.4, I simply like it better and it really suits R&D foliage i use often. And after I do that the hangout problem starts the next time I open the scene and try to render it. But when I make a clean 2014 file with default settings and merge the scene with it - it all works fine again. It must be about gamma/lut sets, but I just don't have sufficient technical knowledge to understand what exactly is causing the problem. Anyway, I just thought somebody could find this info useful.
  3. Hm, just tried the oldest trick in the book: to merged everything with a new blank file - and it seems it actually worked. Nevertheless, I would sure like to know what's causing these sort of things...
  4. Hi, Got a large exterior scene, yet not too large, i think. I didn't make the building model, it was imported from ACAD or some derivate. Whenever I try to render even medium-low details/resolution image I get a hangout in the end (when it says: rendering done). It just freezes at that point. What could be causing the problem? I get no warning whatsoever in the dialog box. I've raised dynamic mem. limit, turned bitmap paging on - nothing. Help, please.
  5. I hope this is the right place, maybe I should have move the post to some general section... Anyway, I'm not a Revit user and , basically, I need it only when importing rvt files for further use in 3DSMAx. Now, my problem is that I often get complex buildings with lots of details as separate objects (e.g. windows). This is usually a disaster for Max, especially when adding additional details afterwards - props, plants, landscaping... A scene can become obese, laggy and sometimes almost unmanageable. I would like to know if there is a way to merge (combine) Revit elements into single objects, grouping them, let's say, by name or material, prior to export. This would make a scene much more easy to work with. I tried using tha workflow thingy but didn't get the result I need. Any suggestions?
  6. yeah, sorry, i was not clear, i did use vray blend material. and i agree that solution based on geometry would, as always look most convincing, however, as i said, i'm trying to get as much as possible from the material. for example, i have tried something similar: i created two overlapping planes: one with base texture, and the other the glass layer to which i added vray displace with fitting displacement map. and it looks very good and accurate; however it did affect the rendering time, a lot. thanks.
  7. i'm ok with the base texture, i already have that one, it's the glass volume effect i'm trying to produce - as cheap as possible. so far the "cheapest" solution i found is to use blend material (texture for the base and reflective for the coat) and to add some displacement to it. i guess shellac could do too... making the thin box with the texture on the backside does the trick too but i'm experimenting with the texture only approach (flat surface - no geometry mods). thanks for the suggestions.
  8. hi guys, i need some help or at least an opinion. as the title says, i'm trying to create a nice colored glass tile (mosaic) backsplash material. now, i've been experimenting with blend and 2sided materials, even tried the shellac just for fun, but i just can't get the volume effect for that glass layer, if you know what i mean. do you have any suggestions and is this even doable just by editing the material. thanks. ps for the record blend mtl looks best and quite good when not in close-up.
  9. hm, strange... in the state of despair i tried adding map scaler modifier - and it worked. who knows how and why...
  10. hi guys, a quick question: i got some objects originally imported from revit. i didn't do the conversion, i just got the file. now, the reflections in glass and reflective surfaces are very strange, it is a typical smoothing problem when importing geometry, i'm sure most of you had seen it before. however, when i try clearing smoothing groups or adding blank smooth modifier - nothing changes. there are too many poligons to re-create or fix them all one by one, is there any other solution? thanks.
  11. Huh, imagine that... Such a basic thing and I didn't have a clue about it. Thanks guys.
  12. Hi guys, I was just testing Vray 3 for Max 2014 and I noticed a warning about the "bitmap pager" being enabled. Supposedly, it could slow down rendering process. Is this something I should take in consideration? Should I turn it off? Also, as a side question: while rendering an interior scene I've noticed that compiling geometry phase lasted too long (got stuck for a minute or two on a single object). Has anyone else experienced something similar? Thanks.
  13. here is one more idea: try using vray environment override, from render setup menu. add your vray sky map to both gi and reflection/refraction slots.
  14. PS - don't use standard material for glass with vray, it kinda kills the purpose of using vray at all.
