  1. Yup, that makes sense. Since my workflow sticks to sRGB though, it is still confusing the color shifting from PS (in fact in AE it looks fine). At this point I'll do one simple thing: I'll reset PS preferences and start from scratch. That usually helps Thanks for helping out Jeff.
  2. Oh sure, I don't use Save for Web for post production. I usually rely on TIF or PSD, or EXR when I don't need any post in PS - I don't like the way PS handles EXR. AE is a little better, NUKE is waaaay better. The thing is, I do need to export for web, some of my work goes there, and as far as I know Save for Web is the best tool in order to keep file size small.
  3. Hm... I'll go through all steps once again. In the meantime, just to double check: would you use "Convert to sRGB" from Save for Web or would you turn that off? Thanks for helping Jeff!
  4. Since my monitor will hardly show anything more than sRGB, at this point I can probably just leave the Proof Colors off. Ok, my typical color setting in AE is Rec 709, but like I said for this test my project setting was sRGB. Since my PS color settings it's sRGB they should match, although they don't. AE sRGB version is more saturated, vivid colors (which is what comes from the ACR editing). Now, for what concerns my camera settings and how I shoot: camera is a Sony A-6000, color settings is sRGB (I wanted to keep everything on the same page). I shoot raw and the photo sample I posted was originally a Raw picture, opened and edited via Camera Raw. Once I was done with the editing, I saved it from PS as a PSD file (that was the only operation I did within PS). I opened the PSD file in AE and saved a PNG wich Color Management ON. I saved the image again with Color Management OFF (and in fact you can tell the difference). Then I saved a PNG from PS as well (I didn't use Save for Web) and it looks like the CM off AE version. Last step was converting the results to JPGs (which look identical to the PNGs). That's all.
  5. Thank you so much to both of you for helping! Jeff, here's a screen shot: The workflow I'm after is something that will let me to work with computer generated images and photography and keep as much consistency as possible across digital platforms (browsers, computers, tablets), which I know won't be 100% accurate. The confusion began with the Proof Colors and Save for Web. I overlooked the color management in the other apps, trying to get the same results across all the apps. That being said, I assume PS and AE should match, as long as I work in the same color space, which in this case it is sRGB. And they don't: AE, CM off: AE, CM on: PS, default settings (as screen shot above): Now, from my PS settings I would assume I'm working in sRGB. If that's the case, why AE sRGB and PS sRGB don't match? If it's not the case, I don't know what I'm doing wrong in PS as it seems is not working in sRGB space. Btw, I saved the images skipping the Save for Web option for now, going with a PNG save instead and then converting to JPG. From what I can tell, converting from PNG to JPG, I don't see any particular change or loss for what concerns the color space. SgWRX, thank you, that's quite a description! I'll have to read it again, but one thing caught my attention right away, and it's in your Windows Color Management Settings. In fact, I didn't have the "use windows display calibration" checked on the second advanced option. I turned it on, but honestly I can't tell the difference. Should I noticed it?
  6. Hi all, First off my apologies for posting about an issue which has been discussed over and over. Some years ago I read this very interesting thread here on CgArchitect with all those great explanations by Jeff. I had it. It worked. I thought "this is it", never more crazy color management issues from now on! Then new machine, new installation, what seemed crystal clear started to fade over the time, I guess especially because something that one sets up once in a while kind of gets lost in one's memory. And here I am. Reading forums, blogs and feeling more confused than ever. So, here's the situation. I calibrated my monitor (an ASUS PB Series PB238Q 23-Inch Screen LED-lit) with Color Munki, which worked great. After a fresh installation of PS I felt already confused about the Proof Colors. I thought: "Well, my main delivery is for the Internet, I'll just set up the Proof Setup to Internet Standard (sRGB), I'll turn on Proof Colors and I'm done!". No sir! So, let's try just the basics, matching what I see locally here on my machine. Not even that is working (and I guess I'm messing this up). I changed the proof setup to Monitor, now the image looks darker in PS. So, let's just turn everything off, no proof colors at all, let's just do a Save for Web. Another step into the abyss! If Convert to sRGB is off, the img I export looks darker compared to any setup I'm using (Internet sRGB, Monitor or even just leaving Proof Colors off). Whereas when I turn on Convert to sRGB from Save for Web, then what I export looks the same as the img in PS as long as Proof Colors is off. And it looks the same both in FF and locally on my machine (using whatever viewer/apps, except for the built-in MS picture viewer). See my confusion? I'm aware that there's no perfect solution to color management, each screen/platform/app reacts to color management in different ways. But at least I should be able to control what I'm doing on my same machine. Sorry for the long post
  7. Wished Max had a Mograph tool, so many times I needed something similar... Anyway, the closest thing I can get is a Pflow and a map to position the slats. Not perfect yet, I might messing up with the settings. I think I've got it working once, meaning even space at the base and a better gradually spacing as it grows.
  8. Well, you've got so close though! Maybe I'll find a script, thanks for the tip
  9. Thank you for helping! @ Dean: when I shift/drag all the verts result shifted from the original position. How to avoid that? @ Jason: that sound great! Just can't figure out how you use a scatter compound on a point helper, scatter voice here is greyed out. Can use it only with a mesh. Parenting the point to the mesh doesn't work, as scatter compound will only scatter the mesh ignoring any parent/group elements.
  10. Thank you for helping Corey, nice idea about the lattice. I'm using this script and it's working really well: http://www.scriptspot.com/3ds-max/scripts/link-to-vertex For now I ended up using polys as position reference for AE, splitting them up and then exporting their coordinates. For this first test it's working and seems to be enough, if need more I'll find other workarounds.
  11. This question is because of the solution you suggested Basically I need to export point helpers position to AE for each vertex of my mesh. Linking each point to related vertex is time consuming, thus I thought that at the end what I actually need is just vertex position. In Blender it's easy, I can simply use the command "Delete Only Edges & Faces" and all the vertexes will be left. I hoped there was something similar in Max.
  12. Hi there, is there a way in 3ds Max to delete only polygons from an object but keep the vertexes? Thanks for any help!
  13. Thank you Francisco. I might not have described correctly what I'm doing. I'm rendering a Vray shadow pass from Render Elements. Basically I'm separating the diffuse, GI, reflection, depth, wire color and shadow from the Render Elements in order to re comp everything in AE (or Nuke) and then tweak any separate passes as I need. I don't seem to find Matte Shadows from the Elements Menu on the Render Panel. I thought I had to use a Matte Shadow material.
  14. Thank you Francisco. Yes, basically I need to tweak the shadow in After Effects. I've never used the matte shadow, need to find a tutorial I guess. Hope is not too complicated, need to get this done in the next hour.
